Tenon size on front sight of GI?

I have a Springfield Armory 1911-A1 made in 2006.
I would like to change the sight to some that are a bit taller.
What is the size of the front tenon? Thanks in advance.

I believe SA used a proprietary size on the staked in front sights. If I remember right, they use a medium instead of the usual narrow/wide options.

So you can either buy the wide version and fit it to your slide, or you can have the slide machined for dovetail sights.

I have a SS GI model, and when the sights get changed, it will be to a dovetail version.

In looking around, I found this - he mentions the GI tenon...

Hope this helps,
Bob S.

Springfield offers a 3 dot set that will fit the GI frame without any modications. When I ordered mine about 2 years ago they were $40. The front tenon is a unique size from what I have read. It is not a small, medium or large. Most folks report they ordered a large tenon an Dremel'd the tenon to fit snuggly. I went the $40 route and ordered a set of 3 dots from S.A. and had a friend with a sight tool install them for me. You can always have a dovetail cut into the slide and then you can install just about any sight out there (not cheap).
