USGI Colt 1911 inspectors stamp numbers ???

I am sorry if this question has been addressed before. A good friend of mine has a Colt USGI 1911. It's serial number is 2984xx. It was manufactured in 1918. We stripped it down for a detailed and precise inspection to see if it was all correct. Using Mr. Clawson's book as a reference, we have concluded that it is in fact 100 % correct except for one thing that is not addressed in Clawson's book. We noticed that the Colt final inspectors number stamp on the frame is not the same number as the final inspectors stamp on the slide. The frame has the number "8" stamped on it and the slide has the number "7" stamped on it. Question: is this an indication that the slide is not original to this frame ? In other words, does the frame and slide have to have the same exact inspector numbers to be original ?

Short answer is no. These were assembler/inspector marks at the assembly level. For 1911s the slide and frame should match but they match by color, finish and the type faces used to roll mark frame and slide. Most importantly, the wear marks on slide and frame should be consistent.

Inspectors typically had specific responsibilities. It would be doubtful that one inspector did both major components.
