1911 for ccw

Do any of y'all carry a full size 1911 as ccw?
I just bought the Taurus alum frame 1911 thinking
it may be good for all of the above:
Truck Gun
range buddy
ccw
If so,what holster type is most popular?
And what grain ammo do y'all use for defense?

picking a holster type is akin to picking a wife....youre going to be wearing it a lot, so pick one that fits your lifestyle.

I have 4 different holsters, depending on whats going on.

For long distance driving (its 10 hours in the saddle from end to end in Texas), I have a shoulder holster.

Come hunting time, I have a standard issue GI flap holster.

And for general running about, and weather dependent, I have an IWB and an OWB holster, a combination of Galco and Bianchi leather products.

I do recommend a good belt and dont skimp on the holster, either. A cheap, ill fitting holster could get you killed too.

For ammo, I carry 200 grain hollow points of one maker or another...provided they function in my weapon. I also carry handloads which you may or may not wish to trust.

I carry a PT1911 on and off duty. In Texas LEO's don't have to conceal so I carry a G&G Paddle and a Yaquie Slide

For years in the 70s and 80s I used to carry a full size Gov. in a shoulder holster. It was pretty comfy.

For me nothing rides as good as kydex. I love the way it conceals and holds the weapon. But the holster is second to getting a good belt. Without a good belt- it wont matter what type of holster you have.

OWB holster by Tagua

I carry a fullsize 1911, American Classic II, Armscor. It feels fine to me, I am used to carrying about 20+ pounds of gear as an officer anyway so a fullsize 1911 and two extra mags feels light! I agree, get a good holster and belt. I bought a cheap belt and it was destroyed in less than a few months.

Mine is a Blackhawk CQC leather IWB holster. It holds it nice and tight against my side so I can carry even under relatively tight sweatshirts/jackets. The size of the gun compared to the size of my body seems to suggest I won't be carrying in the summer though

Depending on what side of the bed I get up on, I'll CCW either a Taurus PT 1911DT (.45), a S&W 1006 (10mm), or a Beretta 92F Compact (9mm). I use an appropriately sized Gould & Goodrich Yaqui for each. I've never had any problems/concerns/discomfort carrying CCW with any of them...As for ammo when CCW, I use the Winchester PDX1 for the .45 and 9mm, and Buffalo Bore for the 10mm...

bikerboy,

Everything you have read here is great information, from knowledgeable people. However, you have to find what works for you. Most of us have tried many styles, shapes and sizes of holsters, and many have drawers that are full of what did not work. I personally have been carrying the 1911 for over a decade in an IWB, OWB, Crossdraw, Shoulder Holster even Small of the Back (SOB) style holsters. What's not so funny is that, the holster I now carry in is one like a buddies that he let me borrow and wear for a day. If you know anyone who carries that gun, and loves the holster they carry with, ask to borrow it for a day and wear it, trying to do everyting you would while doing so. That is only half of the equation here....the belt that you use to carry that large gun, in whatever holster you choose, must be able to do so effectively, or you probably will not find the "perfect" holster for your needs. I personally carry my Wilson Combat 1911 in a custom Milt Sparks Versa Max 2, supported by a Don Hume 1 3/4" wide Gunbelt. I have carried this way for almost 8 years now and have carried for as long as 24hours consecutively in extreme comfort. Most belts are not sufficiently stiff to carry a firearm....unless they are designed to do so.
I have given away all the holsters I no longer wear on different "Pay It Forward" threads in several forums I frequent...otherwise I would offer them to you to try.
Good Luck on your choice.

Thanks so much text45acp,I'll check that holster out.In the meantime I have 2 great stiff belts from western shop, great for holsters,so I am good there.I seem to like the Galco Stow&Go iwb.I have one for my 9mm also Don Hume makes some great stuff and both of these I have worn comfortably.Sooner or later I'll find one that is the best for me.

I have two 1911's, but my main carry is the Commander size S&W 1911ES, which I carry in a Galco OWB Concealable leather belt holster.
