The 45acp Debate

Funny and interesting at the same time.
Is 45acp a good SD round?

It's been pretty reliable since 1911. I have read that the Germans weren't real fond of being shot with one in a couple of World Wars.

In plastic I DON'T like .45 but the 1911 with a bull barrel and good grips allow the combo to run as fast as a G19 so I prefer it vastly for carry due to how much faster it is on target.

Good round? That is a silly question for anyone who has studied history. Vs 9mm and 38s round for round? No contest, with 45-HP's expanding some 60% more in surface area, and having materially more momentum. A 10+1 9mm vs 8+1 in 1911's, do the total fire-power in mag math, 45 wins again. A 15+1 9mm vs 13 R 45 in Poly, do the math 45 still wins in total fire-power. If you can't shoot a 45 well, yep 9mm is a better choice and nothing wrong with a 9 for SD.

In guns shorter than 4" the 45 does become more challenging to shoot in 230gr trim, but an easy solution to this is to use the lighter 45 loads, which still match or beat 9mm in momentum and still bring the advantage of a big-fat round. That said in my 3.3 inch XDs I still run 230 grain, not looking to make 25y shot with this gun (although I can of course), it is for very "personal" stuff :-).

If you ever get the opportunity to shoot the Walther PPQ M2's in 45 give it a try (just for the sport, not to replace anything you have). This is my fastest-poly-45 (shooting 230 HST). Two reason's, the ergonomics and the truly amazing poly-trigger. Some folks who carry them feel the trigger is too light, but given you are use to custom 1911 triggers on the light side I think you would like it. And accurate as heck 1" at 25 yards off a rest. Naturally, it is a slightly wider than a commander-1911 as the PPQ holds 12 45 rounds (nice)...I own both the PPQ M2 45 and 9mm, both fine guns, but the 45 is way more fun to shoot, and faster because it has a better-trigger...Will it be faster than a fine 1911 "commander" bull-b, in 45, no, but close (and you get ~50% more rounds). I like it as an alternative sometimes because it performs close to my expensive 1911's, has higher capacity, is virtually maintenance free, and I can "abuse" it sort of speak without any guilt ;-) (only $550).

Perhaps because you dont have the Comedy channel

A side note, i'll be testing some 45acp JHP's with various types of frangible materials in the HP part. Not to compare against any other caliber, just a comparison between rounds out of same box, etc. Gelatine and maybe plywood tests.

Nothing says America like the 45acp. Now lets all bow our heads and give thanks to JMB for giving us the beloved 1911.

I can dig it.

Even in Tupperware, it can still get the job done.

I’m probably not alone in my observation that with the reemergence of the 9mm as the overall LEO and CCW “it” caliber, I am reading an awful lot of reports of perps and overall A-holes being shot and HOSPITALIZED...

Before anyone goes crazy telling me how all pistol calibers are bad “stoppers”, etc. just think about this:
In the crazy of the situation, what happens if you only get ONE hit on a baddie? Not two, or 8 or 15, but ONE.
I’d rather I hit them with the proven hammer that is the .45 ACP

P.S. - The most important thing to remember is to have a gun. For your one in a million chance encounter, the odds need to be in your favor.
