1911 Commander 10mm gun build.....

I am sure a 1911 Commander 10mm would be a fun build, however, it may not be practical. If it is not shot frequently, with the proper balance of the recoil and mainspring for the power of the load used, it may be OK. If the gun will be used quite frequently, with thousands of rounds fired with full power 10mm loads, the recoil impulse will most likely cause the slide to frame fit to loosen substantially......the aluminum rails of the frame may "stretch" and the slidestop pin may not make the best contact with the lower barrel lugs.

Also, I would highly recommend a ramped barrel for the high case pressure generated by the 10mm. A ramped barrel often allows better case support, and less chance of a case blow out. All it would take is a round that bounces hard off the feed ramp of the frame, causing bullet "set-back" which may make a dangerously high pressure load that could cause a case blow out, damage the gun and/or the shooters hand.

The difference in weight of a steel vs. aluminum frame is not too significant, but the "risk versus the reward" of using an aluminum frame for a powerful 10mm load may not be practical and potentially less safe for the user...….

Nope, I don't have any aluminum guns. Except for my S&W model 386 PD .357 magnum Scandium revolver with titanium cylinder. The frame is an aluminum scandium alloy. Scandium gives the aluminum extra strength to handle the .357 magnum rounds without cracking the aluminum.

I do have a 10mm DW Specialist Commander, which is all stainless steel- again no aluminum to crack. By the way, Underwood Ammo company recommends using ramped barrels when using full power 10mm rounds. I'd stay away from unramped barrels. Unless you are only going to be using those neutered, 10mm rounds that are equivalent to inferior .40 S&W ballistics.

Go ahead and build it. If, at some undetermined round count, you have frame troubles, replacements are available.

Also note about half of "10mm" is actually loaded to .40S&W ballistics, so if you find you dislike the recoil of real 10mm, you can just shoot one of the wimpy brands, or just swap a .40 barrel in.

I have a Springfield Armory TRP 10mm. Love it. Accurate and the 6 inch slide helps with the accuracy and recoil.

The 10mm Cartridge is pretty hard on a 1911 platform.
On a build like yours I would worry about the frame cracking or the the recoil spring getting beat up in short order.
Currently I'm working with a 38 Super. balistics can come close to a 10mm or 357 magnum, but it isn't hard on the 1911 platform.
