Older Kimber Question: External Extractor

A friend has an older 5Ē lightweight Kimber with the external extractor. Iím talking to him about buying it. In the dark recesses of my 73 year old brain, I recall something about issues with the external extractor pistols. Does anyone have information regarding those pistols? I donít want to plunk down money from my rapidly shrinking stash on a problem. Thanks and God bless.

Older Kimber Question: External Extractor

I have owned 2 Kimberís with external extractors that had some failures to extract a custom cdp ii and a compact cdp ii Kimber didnít replace the slides like everyone said they would. But they did send me 3 new replacement extractors. Kimber said they where the newer versions and I ordered Wolff xtra power springs for the external extractor. Put a few 1000 rounds through both and never had an issue..

I bought a new eclipse pro in 2004. 2010 at 5000+ rounds it started to have issues. To be clear, it fed and fired flawlessly up until it didn’t. Sent it back at a cost of $50. They required the original receipt to me. We went round and round. They didn’t want to replace the slide, I didn’t want their failed execution of a external extractor. We finally got around to agreeing to replace the slide and the dim sights, and as I recall I had to pay $100. I called back after a month and they said it was being fit. Two weeks later it was in my hands.
My gun got used, but it wasn’t scratched up. It came back with tool marks and the infamous idiot scratch. Luckily it buffed out with 800 grit and oil. There was sand in the slide. The logo on the slide looks kind of goofy. Like it’s a Chinese knock off goofy.
I’ve put another 2k rounds through it without a hiccup.
I tried to sell it but everyone is turned off by the slide story so I’ll keep it.

It is the most accurate pistol I own, best trigger, great fit on the controls, perfect “snick”, and the eclipse model looks badass. It’s a great gun, I’ll just never deal with Kimber again. Their customer service sucks.

she said she didn't like guns because she was afraid someone might get shot.
I told her I always carried a gun in case I come across someone that need shooting.

The external extractor was a dismal failure, even after several attempts. Now I'd worry about getting parts when needed.
Treat me good, I'll treat you better. Treat me bad, I'll treat you worse.

I'd avoid that gun like it was made of herpes.

There's better Kimbers out there. As was mentioned, their external extractor guns were a dumpster fire.
