Penetrating .45 acp ammo

I carry full size 5" 1911's as my daily carry. I am looking for a carry round that can penetrate barriers such as windshields, car doors etc... I know Cor-bon makes the DPX but on in 185gr. I am looking for 230gr. Any help would be appreciated.

But the HP rounds will still deflect and loose some weight going through barriers. In the .45, I'd stick with regular ball ammo if my main purpose was worrying about windshield penetration.

Browning sells a 230gr FMJ flat point at a rated 920 fps that might perform a tad bit better than plain old FMJ. A box of 50 in blackened nickel plated cases is about $24 at Midway.

If you can find something in the Flat Point variety, give them a try.

Here's the theory of the flat point as the better penetrator than round nose.

http://www.gsgroup.co.za/articlepvdw.html

It is for big game rifle bullets, but the theory should hold true for pistol rounds. Think Elmer Keith and the semi-wadcutter bullet.

Underwood Extreme penetrator is about the best on the market for this type of use. And also leaves larger wound cavities then Ball ammo does.

Thanks for the link, I like the wide variety of ACP. Think I'll order up one of each.

i carry 3 spare mags. Two with JHP, the last with ball. I don't know of any situation, beyond zombie land, that I would need to try and penetrate metal, but who knows what the future holds

Try any of the premium self defense/law enforcement rounds on the market, they are all designed with barrier penetration in mind.

Personally, I am partial to Speer GDHP.

200 gr. SWC Leadhead Hardcast
.45 ACP @ 1,000 fps

Hornady XTP doesn't expand as big as Gold Dots, HSTs

I've got a S&W 625 5" bbl. & besides the
200 gr. SWC load, I also have .45 Auto Rim
with the Barnes XPB 225 gr. HP @ 940 fps.

Thanks for all the responses. I bought some Hornady Critical Duty 220 Gr. +P. Ran in thru my DW Valor today and ran flawless. Good ballistics from what I read about it.

GONRA remenbers "Highway Master" (or some such) "metal penetrating" ammo
sold commercially (Remington? Winchester?) in 1930's - 1940's.
.38 Spl, .357 Mag & .45 ACP calibers.
Believe they hada cast zinc bullet? Double check all this...

I would imagine a solid zinc bullet would penetrate very nicely! Unfortunatly, zinc is usually going to have a much lower weight than its lead counterpart.

No it doesn't. But it does expand more reliably (short barrels, low velocity, multiple layers of denim, etc) to the diameter that it does expand to and still penetrates very well. At least with the Gold Dots they have instances of not expanding at all under less than ideal conditions. The HST is a newer round with not as much extensive testing done yet but what is out there looks really, really good.
XTPs are a very well tested, very reliable, known quantity.

Winchester Ranger T series. Very very good ammo. Will do everything you asked and have plenty of punch to knock down what you are shooting at

What self-defense situation do you foresee that involves you needing to be that serious about shooting through windshields & cardoors?
