Options for 6" slides or for comp'd barrels are much more limiting. Many of the options are for competition in USPSA Open, like CR Speed, Ghost, DAA, etc.

Would this be for backcountry or range use?

For Hunting on Wisconsin farmland / forests.
I picked up an inexpensive nylon one (like Uncle Mike's makes) and it works. It's actually for a revolver so it's got extra length. Would like to get one that's shorter.

Off-body carry can be an option for some hunting applications.

Not for everyone or quickest access, but it can have a place and provide excellent protection (including protection against rain, mist, etc.) for a firearm that you have extra seconds of time to bring into play for many hunting applications.

A chest rig is a nice choice, especially if you have on a backpack.

The other option is a competition rig with some retention, like a 3Gun holster. Redhill Tactical has a great option for 6" slides with some cool style.
