are 1911 barrels all the same?

i just got my first 1911 a few months ago and i have a lot to learn about them. mine is a Ruger SR1911 5" and i want to know if a barrel from another 1911 will fit mine?

and while im asking, do all 1911 mags fit each other?

Another barrel will fit but all barrels should be fitted taking care to meet minimum safety criteria. MIlSpec GOvt 1911 parts are relatively interchangeable but still barrel fit should be checked especially if you are fitting an aftermarket barrel (many are slightly oversize to allow fitting). The function can be affected if the barrel fit is not correct. While any single stack magazine should fit any 1911 form factor pistol, some magazines work better than others in some pistols, depending on certain factors. It is always a good idea to test out a new magazine and fire a couple hundred rounds or so thru it prior to using it as a primary mag.

The short answer is no. Some barrels made by the same manufacturer won't drop in a gun from a similar or even the same model.

A 1911 barrel usually requires some level of fitting, especially when swapping in a barrel from another manufacturer.

Custom2 has much more gunsmithing experience than I have, so you should give much more weight to his answer than to my answer. Now, having said that, my experience has been that almost all 1911 barrels are interchangeable, in that they will fit, and somewhat function. I agree with C2 that almost none will function as well as the original barrel unless it is "fitted". But most barrels will "drop in" and function. There may be major issues that will damage the barrel or slide over time, but they should function in the short term.

Almost all 1911 magazines are interchangeable as to fit. Function is another matter. Different magazines have....well......differences. Some have the locking notch a little higher or lower, causing the rounds not to feed well. Some have different types of followers or feed lip styles causing some ammo not to feed well. And, sometimes a certain type of follower just won't trip the nub on the slide stop which locks the slide back when the last round is fired.

So, the short, but not simple answer to your simple questions is "yes and no".
