I have read most of the posted responses here, watched the video on the news yesterday. First of all I agree the youths had criminal intent for the officer, this situation was brewing for quite some time.
The kids ganged up on the Officer, even though they all knew he was a police man. Very disturbing circumstances for LEO, I only have a problem with escalating situation by use of Deadly Force.
Please I need some help with this concept, what cold have been done to prevent the officer from displaying the weapon to gain control of the situation.
When I saw the video it looked like the off duty officer shot a round into the ground to gain control the situation. Being in California I am sure the discharge will be deemed a careless use of deadly force.
I am perplexed but concerned for the outcome & safety of the officer in this case. He was being forced into a situation for his safety. However the discharge of his weapon changed everything here.
I come from a family of cops, so I am not cop bashing. But, why aren't these cops just backing down? If the kid had committed a dangerous crime, I believe the cop would have pulled his weapon way earlier in the situation. He jerked around that situation for a long time before pulling his gun. Also, from what I gather, he was out of his area of jurisdiction. A smart person would have made the choice to make notes and observe, alert PROPER authorities, and given them the details. I don't know if its movies that make people think they can't back down, but sometimes backing down is the smart move. For the public and officer both.
I had the utmost respect for the law when I was a youngun, yet if some dude was grabbing my friend like that and I doubted he was a cop, you darn tootin I would help my friend. I have no idea if that is what happened, but I do know from what the video shows, he was NOT identifying himself properly. He should have had his badge out in his hand and been announcing it several times. As many people were there, a cop would have to do that to insure everyone was informed. And to cover their own rear end.
Back to guns. I recently read a very good article somewhere that made some good points. The author quoted a study based on police training videos that showed that 40% of cops had their finger on the trigger during gun handling drills. Most were not aware they were doing it and most denied it until they were shown the videos. We're not talking about "ready on the line" situations. Based on this information, the author stated, and I tend to agree, that it is a good reason why cops should not carry striker/firer guns without a manual safety. If its happening 40% of the time in non-stressful training situations, what's the chance it's happening in a stressful scenario like this? Unfortunately, this is also a sad statement about the lack of firearms training that most PD offer their officers. I know that locally, they only make one mandatory trip to the range to do their annual re-quals. Perhaps a few of our officer and retired officer brethren can comment.
The cop will get the short end, the kids will be awarded millions, new cars, a movie deal and an apology. That's what the liberal courts do. They did scatter didn't they. Wonder if the kids would like to learn skydiving?
Did anyone else see the news footage with the graffiti "a short word ending in a K PIG" scrawled across the garage door, a broken window in what appears to be the garage, and two cars in the driveway (background) keyed to all heck. Can't say when that happened.
Not there myself, all is speculation but calling for backup from the police dept seems a good idea now, hindsight is always 20-20.
I posted on this earlier, sorry the guy is toast. LAPD with 10-12 thousand officers will not condone his actions. I hope he has his twenty years in so he can retire. I saw several times when he could have de-escalated the situation and walked. No criminal charges for him, but he is history as a police officer.
This could very easily have been avoided and prevented. As soon as he left the safety of his home to confront them he himself created the situation. If he wasn't a cop and didn't have a gun any bets on whether or not he'd do same thing?
Just get a big strong sprinkler system and always turn it on at that time of day.
Problem solved from safety of the inside of your home.
CLEARLY MISSED in the video...they had just gang raped his dog....kicked his wife...and took a chit on his lawn....dam right he was mad....joking a side...if my son had a mouth like this kid (aka) lil gangster and be a tough guy in front of my homies... (guaranteed) many trips to the dentist or doctor , just saying! Sad part is ...this guy made a mistake by putting his hands on the boy... he will lose his job...definitely will be moving soon..cuz I see major chit going down at his house...from keying his car..to gang raping the dog... kicking his wife... & chitting on the lawn!!!!...all over the kids cutting thru his beautiful yard...really we don't know the whole story but looks like it escalated into the biggest nightmare by pulling a gun... mom always said pick your battles...he picked the wrong battle...no matter what the kid did... now this pathetic punk will be making $$ on you tube ..what has the world come too!!!! million ways to handle that..that wouldn't have been my first pick.. we get enough bad publicity w/ guns...come on people..I love my guns!!!
The backstory is that these kids had continually cut across the officer's lawn and he had warned them in the past. They all knew he was an officer, neighborhood kids, this is not the first time they've encountered him. The kid allegedly said that he would shoot the officer. That's Aggravated Menacing in Ohio and a go to jail statement. The officer was trying to get the kid back to his house to wait for the on duty officers who had been called. The kid resisted and his friends then assaulted the officer and knocked him down. **** just got very real, multiple big kids engaging and assaulting the officer, and he responding with the threat of deadly force. We don't know if the shot was intentional or not. Time will tell. Remember, the video is only part of the story, the audio was sketchy at best. Bottom line...stay the f**k of other people's property if they don't want you on it. Respect the fact that it's not your property AND the owner is a police officer, they pushed, he pushed back, now several are arrested. Its easy to second guess when you don't know the history, or didn't see the start. The 13 year old needs his ass whipped by his parents and made to apologize to the officer. Instead, riots and lawsuits, so glad I'm retired.
I was watching the news and they interviewed some of the adult neighbors that supported the off-duty police neighbor. She said a crowd of kids come through the neighborhood en masse every afternoon after school. Many walk through the street, sidewalks, lawns, back yards, and get loud and rowdy. There is also a nearby skateboard park and several schools.
We had a similar issue at one of the communities (3000 homes) that I have investment rental property at. The school buses would come through the guard gates (and there were several) would drop off an entire busload of kids at one bus stop and a large number of kids would just cut through manicured lawns and gardens. The homeowner association had to get involved and arranged to have the bus make a series of stops closer their homes and smaller groups let out at one time.
It's really a problem in many areas when school lets out and the kids are outside the authority of the school, the parents or any authority figures. You have 30 to 40 unsupervised rowdy kids happy to be out of school.
The kid lives down the block. No matter the altercation, call the police and have him arrested. The kid is not going to flee the country. No need for that to happen. Discharging a weapon into a crowd of kids for any reason violates all reason. Turn him loose, go home, and call the police.
All I know... Great F#k'n job to the parents of these future criminals; way to instill respect & courtesy in your children. Look forward to paying for their future incarcerations.
Living in Ana-Crime, I believe this is very near where the residence protested the Anaheim police for shooting a well know gang member (about 3 -4 years ago). These A-holes tore up the local businesses and cried that their former loved one was ONLY a gang member...
Glad he's gone, we're all better without him or any gang scum.
I can not judge the off duty police officer, since even with video, I can not determine the cause of why the police officer tried to detain/arrest the teenager.
An off duty officer holding a teenager with one hand may not be have been able to call for back-up......
Personally, as a former LEO, I would have called for back up first before approaching the rowdy teenagers.....it seems these teenagers were cutting through peoples yards and generally being a nuisance for quite a while.....and were probably visiting the nearby skateboard park quite often....
This reminds me of an incident that happened with a Texas State Trooper.....he was a big, strapping man, well over 6ft tall, and stopped a car with 4-5 Hispanic males one evening on a deserted highway. I don't believe any of the Hispanic males were over 5'8" tall, and the LEO attempted to conduct a search for drugs in the vehicle. All of the events were recorded on the Officer's dashboard camera. The Hispanics attacked and over powered the LEO, dragged him off to the side of their vehicle, then shot and killed him with his own gun. The LEO's poor judgment got him killed......
Just speculating, because apparently there's no facts...beyond the off duty cops gun going off.
Maybe the homeowner was standing outside trying to prevent further vandalism or damage to his property. When the kids en masse are passing by, there's some words exchanged, and it escalates from there. The guy should've video'd the wise a$$ kids instead, ( 20/20 )
Hindsight...id be pissed about any vandalism, but the guy shouldn't have his hands on a 14 yo kid...BUT, once he was attacked, ehhhhh, all bets are off.
Even if the cop gets disciplined,,,imho, every kid on that bus should be brought in for some re educating, disciplining, and maybe even teach them a new word, called, RESPECT.
Keep the first kid off the school bus, charge the other 2 with assault.
Ongoing dispute with the kids walking thru his property as well as others. Been reported many times to no avail. This time I guess he'd had enough and went out to grab one of the 'trespassers' and hold them. The cops were called by several people and just had not arrived yet.
Kids with no respect? Remember the terminally ill guy in Cincinnati several years ago that called the police to advise them that he had just shot/killed a 15 year old that had been destroying his yard/garden for years? Said, "come and get me, I will be dead in 6 months anyway". Guess the kids in LA did not hear about that. Definitely a lesson that will teach respect. Sometimes these kids just push too far and bad things are going to happen.
Escalating the situation where kids are trampling grass to a shooting event was the responsibility of the gun holder. He knew he was armed and yet he still engaged in a verbal interaction with the kids, predictably leading to verbal escalation. Then he made the decision to physically engage and ultimately it led to drawing his gun. He will not do well in the review of this by his department, just based on his lack of good judgment.
I do know they came back and broke all the windows out of his house, and other damage. That's why I prefer a shotgun and don't believe in warning shots.
Shame the shot was wasted. And if true that his fellow officers are not protecting him and his property from these poster children for retroactive abortion, they need to be fired
His police union is backing him, and has said that he has a right to defend himself, correct, that is against criminal charges. His department will not feel the same when it comes to his right to remain an LAPD officer. Believe me that I feel very bad for him, he may be the best officer on his department but even the best officer can make a mistake and he make a LULU. As I said earlier there will be 10-12 thousand officers watching to see if they can react the same way this officer did and not have the LAPD come down on them like a ton of bricks. My opinion has nothing to do with whether he or his neighbors are fed up with these idiots, or whether he had the right to confront them. I'm only saying as any police officer from any department can't do what he did and expect to keep his job.
Does not appear we have everything on the video like happens most of the time. With the kid attacking the officer and pushing him that does not look good on their side and it sounds like the guy who the cop was holding mentioned about not careing if he was a cop or not so the officer did mention he was a cop.
Cop or not, he has no right to physically hold that kid against his will. It only gets worse from there. Disgraceful. I think there could even be an argument made for attempted kidnapping or abduction.
Except if his intention was to arrest the kid. No? I assumed that he was grabbing the kid because he was in the process of arresting him.
