Classic & friends

Wilson Combat CQB Elite, 45 ACP Turnbull blued, 2013 Model
  • Full size .45 ACP
  • One-piece Speed Chute magazine well
  • No FCS, clean slide, Wilson logo on both sides
  • Carry cuts
  • Ball endmill cuts
  • Heavy chamfer bottom of slide
  • Wilson Combat on dust cover
  • Gold bead front sight
  • Flush cut reverse crown barrel
  • Countersink slide stop
  • Slide top serrations
  • Checker rear slide
  • Solid medium trigger
  • High polish Turnbull blue complete pistol
  • • VZ ETC/FRAG black gray carbon fiber grips
  • • Challis signature series spalted pecan grips

Turnbull blue
Very similar to the original bluing method of firearm finishing used by Colt.
The firearm has been polished and then blued. The flats are almost mirror polished.
The color really depends from the lighting.
Under a moderate natural sunlight, it's a light shiny grey-blue (shown in the photos).
At evening under artificial light, it's a dark grey.
It looks stunning. Unfortunately, it's not really suited as a daily carry firearm.
Definitively not the best protection and it will wear rapidly.

Spalted pecan
Carya illinoinensis. Characteristic from south-central U.S.A. and Mexico.
The heartwood tends to be light to medium brown, with a reddish hue.
The sapwood is a paler yellowish brown.
A friend of Brian collected it from a pecan orchard that was old and being cut down.
The coloring comes from fungal attack (amazing). Even though it has been stabilized,
his wood is fairly soft and not recommended for other than exhibition and photos.
At the range, I use the VZ ETC/FRAG black gray carbon fiber grips.

Brian Challis grips
Brian's attention to detail is beyond expectation. Corners are crisp, margins are precise, the fit to the Wilson magazine well is spot on.
Even the unseen parts are professionally done. The cut for the plunger tube has a clean concave shape suited to its purpose,
and the surface hidden by the magazine well is cut with precision and polished. The finish is amazing. There is nothing sprayed on the wood,
it's nothing but wood and oil. If I hold it up to the light it looks like glass, but in the hand it has that warm and natural feeling you can only get from wood.
Brian has a way of bringing out the the best in a piece of material. I can't put words to it, but wood really comes to life under his touch.
It's clear that Brian is not just a skilled woodworker, he is truly an artist.
Such a special and beautiful 1911 also deserves special grips.

At the range
One of the first things that I do with a new pistol is to try the trigger.
A good trigger breaks like a glass rod with moderate pressure, minimum over travel and this one,
as usual for a Wilson 1911, is no exception. I measured an average of 3 lb. 6 oz.
I normally start the first shooting session with a new gun by firing slowly at 10, 12 and 15 yards,
just to get a feeling for the pistol and to see if everything is OK.
The very last picture in this post was taken after a free hand session of 2x 8 rounds at 12 yards using two ETM magazines.
Although I lost my concentration on two rounds, the results on the target were quite gratifying.
There were no malfunctions of any kind during the first range test of this CQB Elite.
I love this feeling of going "bang" every time the trigger is pressed and when the hits are there they are supposed to be.
This pistol is clearly well made, symbolizing the craftsmanship that makes Wilson Combat a leader 1911 manufacturer.
It's an item for collection, but not a safe queen. It was designed to be used as well as visually enjoyed.

With this in mind, enjoy the pics!
