What Do You Carry and Why?

This is an 1911 forum so I guess we all like semi autos. But, when it comes down to every day carry, do you carry a semi auto or do you carry a revolver?

I carry a D/A revolver 95% of the time, sometimes two of them.
I grew up on revolvers so I have that level of comfort.
I like the fact that if I have a bad round of ammo I can pull the trigger again and advance on to the next round.
If I am forced to fire from an awkward position, limp wristing is not an issue.
The drawbacks?
A revolver is not as thin as a semi auto so it might be harder to conceal at times.
Capacity. My revolvers have either a 5 or 6 shot capacity while the semi auto can hold 17 or more rounds of ammo.

I guess the bottom line is that I just feel more comfortable carrying a revolver for my self defense.

Semi-auto... partly because it is what I have the most experience with, partly because of capacity, mostly because it is what I enjoy shooting/owning the most.

Blasphamy to an extent, I have never been much of a fan of revolvers. Just never really been able to get on board with them.

I always carry a semi- auto. I do because of capacity mainly. I tried a revolver carry but didn't like the extra width and the feel of moon clipped ammo in my pockets.

1911s. Exclusively.

Short answer as to the reason: (1) my favorite gun and (2) it has been thoroughly proven as a (and probably "the") superior combat/tactical handgun in two world wars, Korea, Vietnam, and countless other engagements.

Added thought: I'll confess to an occasional desire for the specific advantages a revolver brings to the picture, especially for wilderness carry. However, I decided I wanted to focus 100% of my handgun proficiency efforts (practice, etc.) on one platform, so that my reaction in a SD situation would be (I hope and expect) the exact same reaction I practice towards achieving.

When I lived in WA, which allowed open carry, it was a GP100 with 2 speed loaders off hand.

Practiced with that gun to the point where I can reload just as quick as I can with a mag-fed 1911. Power-wise/accuracy... .357 mag is hard to beat out of a full-size revolver. Not really any failure issues to deal with... fits my hand, natural pointer for me...

My auto is 1911 just because I prefer a full framed, heavy pistol period.

I'd say I split my holster time when in WA 60/40 GP100 to 1911 just because, let's face it, in a "liberal" area like WA, open carrying a 6" revolver drew attention. Though, plopping that into a shoulder rig was always an option and one that I excercised from time to time.

For a long time..I caried the 1911 that got my grandfather through WWl and got my father through Korea. When I finally realized how idiotic it was to carry that piece of family history around and retired it for my own firearm, I had been shooting 1911's my enire life.

I'm too old to change. That, plus the fact that I have never found a platform that I shot better.

Colt 45 acp

I normally carry a 45 acp Colt, on two recent trips to New York I carried a ball peen hammer, why? because where you have no rights you take a hammer.

It isn't a right if they can take it away.

I carry a Glock 21 4th GEN on duty. In the winter I carry a Kimber Eclipse Ultra Carry II and in the summer due to dress I keep a DB9 in my pocket due to size and weight and for my backup.

I carry SS mil-spec in a custom IWB holster most of the time and use my p250 with a cheap blackhawk nylon holster when I go to work, it makes it easy to take off and throw in the glove box..

On duty I carry a FNP45 Tactical, used to be a 1911 but the FN is like a 1911 on 'roids with a 15+1 capacity and a Trijicon RMR02 mini red dot sight.

Off duty I carry either a Novak/Joe Bonar 1991A1 Commander or a Clark/Dietrich Meltdown 1991A1 Compact. Nothing fits, conceals, or points like a good 1911, that's why I carry these.

For farm, woods, and field carry I having a S&W 327NG 8 shot .357mag. It is light, powerful, plenty accurate, and has decent capacity. Plus, since it is a DAO revolver, it is forgiving, no worries about dirt, twigs, mags, limp wristing, etc. It's the perfect hunting, fishing, working in the fields companion.

My preference is semi-auto. Partly because I don't have a revolver, partly just personal preference. Though I will say that is I ever get hold of an SAA it'll see some holster wear. Maybe not as much as my 1911s, but enough to count.

Depends, but split between G30, P229 (357 SIG), and Colt Commander.

Colt is the most accurate, followed by the Sig.

Sig holds the most.

Glock is the lightest.

carried an Aiirweight J frame a few summers in a pocket holster.
and it's still a great carry piece for a "grab 'n go" quick jaunt for mower gas or cigs

but mostly autos now-a-days for all day carry.
Simply due to the thinner profile and ease of concealment ...
(especially with the major caliber pistols designed primarily for CC )
