Ruger Lightweight Commander 9mm

Bought a Ruger Lightweight Commander in 9mm today, new "old" stock. It'll be here on Friday. Looking forward to playing with this one. May carry it some instead of my Sig Ultra Compact 9mm. Price was right too. Got some gray and black G10 sunburst grips that should look great on it. Was kicking around getting the SA RO Champion, but didn't want to deal with the bull barrel/recoil system and the ILS. JMHO, but I like the old system.

I think you chose wisely! The SA RO sights are not skin friendly. Of course if you only intend to handle the SA RO at the range, according to the name, your skin should be safe.

LOL. I had a full size range officer a while back. I replaced the ILS with a regular mainspring housing, but the bull barrel and spring block are just a pain. I really have been pleased with my other SR1911's. Actually the other SR pistols too. Ruger is a great American company IMHO.

Why do so many people dislike bull barrels? I happen to love them. I prefer the look of a bull barrel and takedown is easier.

Call me a traditionalist, but my Sig Ultra Compact has a bull barrel, but uses a guide rod and spring, not a captured one. It is a series 80 style though. Ruger makes a real series 70 style 1911. I like that.

Envy here. Have several Ruger Commander variants in 45 but not a 9mm..... yet. Looked at one in a LGS about a year ago and it amazed me how nice it looked. Better than the pictures in gun mags. Just didn't have the $$ to buy it at that time. I would put new grips on it also.

I also do not like the bull barrel etc. My SR1911-10 has one. A couple months ago went out and shot it along side my SR1911 in 45.

Then the time comes to field strip and clean them......

No. Not a fan of the bull barrel and FLGR. I do still see a nice 9mm Ruger Commander in my future. I do have a Colt Commander in 9mm and it is fun to shoot.

A couple months ago I purchased a LW Commander in 9mm and it has become my everyday carry. I did change out the OE 10# recoil spring for a 12# and did a trigger job. I wish it were a bit more accurate but don't plan to use it for bullseye. The barrel bushing isn't exactly tight so I may make that my next project. All in all I think you will be happy. They are easy to carry.

Finally got it to the range today. I had already polished the fire control group and the ramp and barrel. The gun ran flawlessly. It shot the personal defense loads without a hiccup also. It shot a little bit better groups than my Colt 9mm Competition 5" model. I am gonna love this gun.

The only hand guns I own are Rugers. Yesterday I had my lw commander out and today I was shooting my p345 after installing a 19lb wolff hammer spring. Huge difference.

I have both the Ruger Lightweight Commanders in 9MM and .45ACP. Both are as good as the Colt's in mu opinion at a better price point. I'm tempted to buy another in 9MM and a replacement barrel in 38Super if the breach face allows.

I have a 19lb hammer spring in my P95, I have kept it to go with my original 1998 PC9 carbine. They use the same magazines.

I really like my 9mm LW Commander. 10# recoil spring? I didn't know what it was, but I switched mine to a 16#. Now it feels reliable. I'll admit that the 10# did not fail, it sure felt like it would at any time. Now it feels strong. 16# too much?

I definitely would not run a 16, but that's just me. I have put lots of round thru mine. I don't even use 16# in my 45, LOL. What ever makes you comfortable though.

Ok thanks. The 10 just seemed so weak, like it was on the verge of not working. I suppose Ruger did lots of trial and error before release of the model, so I guess they know what they are doing, lol

I honestly don't know for sure what weight in pounds the spring is on my new Kimber Stainless Target II pistol in 9 mm is. All that I know is that it is considerably lighter than what I am used to, and I'm kind of enjoying it.

Initially, my LW 9mm Commander was experiencing frame bump where the slide would noticeably smack the frame using factory FMJ ammo. I switched the original 10# for new 12# Wolff spring. It feels like a different pistol with less recoil and no bump. You may need to experiment with different spring weights to get the ideal for you pistol due to your particular ammo and gun-to-gun differences. The Commander feels great and is one of my favorite pistols.

Put a 12 in mine works better. Talked to a gunsmith at Nighthawk and he said they always put 12s in theirs. Ruger puts a very light spring in their 9mm.

Here is some more that Gun tests said about the Ruger:
" Left Barrel lock up in the slide is rock solid. The bushing is pleasingly easy to rotate. We could disassemble the pistol without a bushing wrench. The sights are genuine Novak and are set in drift- adjustable dovetails. The Ruger won the accuracy component for each type of ammo fired, then won or placed highly in every speed drill."

I had a Colt Competition in 9mm and in 45. I sold them both. Fit and finish was not great and the accuracy sucked. I have 3 Ruger 1911's that would out shoot both easily and the fit and finish is much better. I have the lightweight commander 9mm that is outstanding and fun to shoot. I used to have a SA Range Officer 9mm. My SA EMP4 9mm is much better also. It and my Ruger LW are my favorite 9mm 1911's.
