My rebuilt Limited Gun

I recently had my SVI limited gun rebuilt and converted from a 45 to a 40. I lucked out in shooting with a crowd of excellent gunsmiths, and got to choose one of them. I chose Gene Shuey, who come to find out has a very much deserved reputation for his excellent gunsmithing and shooting ablilities.
The gun I gave him was a worn but servicable SVI short dust cover frame with a checkered gripframe, a caspian slide with bomar, a schuemann ultimatch 45 barrel, and a tungsten guide rod. Gene and I discussed the issue and I decided to salvage what I could from the oroginal setup, and Gene would supply the new parts and assemble and fit them. In less than 2 weeks after I gave him my pistol, I picked it up again with it's new spirit. The pistol had the same lower half, but refinished and smoothed up a bit. The new top end had the same bomar and guide rod, but an SVI "Unique" slide and KKM bull barrel, with everything fitted together.
What was once a decent pistol, was turned into a true beauty in both form and function. The pistol now shoots such small groups that I can only blame myself if the group is not a ragged hole at 25m. It is also amazingly reliable. The only problems ecountered in the break in period not from my reloads was a slight barrel fitting problem that was remedied the same day I picked up the gun, and the slide stop slipping out and binding the slide twice, which was also fixed.
The fit and finish on this pistol is absolutly amazing. The barrel slides freely and easily in the slide, until it locks. Then they become as one, and there is no movement. The slide and frame mate with such closeness, that it is hard to beleive that they can move against each other as efforlessly as they do. All in all, I am impressed and completly satisfied. The only thing that I would change would be to have done it earlier.

Austin - Excellent report! How does one get in touch with Shuey? If I'm not mistaken, I read about him in an old, old article about Armand Swenson. I seem to recall that Shuey used Swenson's guns for competition, and could hit empty .45 cases tossed in the air on a regular basis. I wonder if this is the same guy. Thanks and God bless.
