Need help making a list of the top ten .45 acp loads for 1911, for defensive....

As well as maybe a top 5 target shooting rounds, or top ten.

Anyway, I have heard that Gold Dot 230grain is some of the best at 800 fps that is supposedly a great man stopper at short, medium or semi-long range. Am I correct?

What are some of the nastiest loads out there? What are speeds, risks of over-penetration, damages to vitals, exit wounds, etc.

It is hard to interpret tone-of-voice in this environment. To me, his answer seems factual and straight-forward.

Thanks Bill, I look forward to reviewing the information.

The pb with polls is that everybody will vote for the round they use; you know how that goes...
The list in post #4 of the thread linked by BillD has been making the rounds on internet forums for a while now and those HP's have performed best in FBI protocols, IIRC. So it's a good place to start. Your requirements may differ, however, and it's best to do your own research because what some guy or lab recommends may not really fit you or your gun.
Bottom line is that in .45 ACP, round selection (for defensive use) is not that critical. 230 grains give the best sectional density, and therefore momentum and penetration. Besides that, all premium (and even less than that) HP's will do their job.
I'd personally add to the list the Remington Golden Saber and Hornady XTP (or TAP).
And because that list was geared toward LEA's, no mention was made of smaller manufacturers who load the same bullets as the big names (DoubleTap, Black Hills, Buffalo Bore, Georgia Arms, etc.), but I wouldn't dismiss them.
And just so we're clear (because people get emotional in these matters), the above is just an opinion.
ETA: read the link fully and the GS is ragged on for its jacket separation issues. If you're concerned about that, they also make a bonded version. It's a good round. The FBI seems to think so, too.

No disrespect intended. I wasn't intending to be rude. But sometimes I do it without intending to, ask one of my ex wives.

We go over this about once a week. If you try the search function you would probably get that link several times.

I'm not sure if that's a commentary on the the bullet or your friend's medical skills.

FBI data aside, and without proven fact, local consensus is that a hit in the thumb with a .45 will knock down your target.

A hit in the thumb will spin them around like a top.

i have been fortunate to be able to shoot with some of the leo's in my area including the FHP, they have sold me on speer golddot 230 jhp. i have used the round many times hunting, and it is exceptionally devastating to wild hogs and deer. after seeing the expansion and penetration on these 4 legged animals I know for certain that any 2 legged types hit with this ammo will no longer be a threat.
