3-gun competition

I haven't participated in 3-gun competition in over 20 years, but I am planning to attend a 3-gun match in mid December.

Twenty years ago, most of the stage designs were such that the long guns used, either a rifle or a shotgun, had to be staged unloaded on a table or in a barrel before transitioning to the pistol. Is this still a common practice, or do
competitors use a sling on their rifle or shotgun, when unloaded and keep them on their body using the sling while transitioning to the pistol....?

Do I need to have a sling on my rifle and my AR-15 style mag fed shotgun...?

It greatly depends on the match. What match and what rule set? All the venues I have been too over the years have their rules posted on their website. Often times a contact phone number is included and they could answer questions about their match that might not be addressed in their rules.

3-gun matches.....

I was chatting with some of my local shooting buddies while at the local range that hosts many shooting disciplines with rifle, shotgun, and pistols. I asked them about the need for a sling when shooting 3-gun, and they said all the long guns must be empty and made safe and either placed muzzle down in a large plastic/polymer barrel or on a table......and a sling may not be used......

No match is going to have you sling a previously hot rifle.
Rarely a match will have you start with an empty rifle slung and then transition to that from something else, but never the other way around, for safety.

Usually with dump barrels if you aren't going forward of them you can ditch your hot gun, on safe, in the barrel.
If you are going forward of the gun it has to be empty in a barrel.

Matches and rules change this constantly, so just pay attention
