SA 9mm Loaded VIS / Lower Lug Peening

I've just noticed some peening on the VIS and lower lug of the barrel on my Springfield 9mm Loaded. I'm pretty sure this is a barrel fit issue. I'm wondering if this is something I should take care of myself by filing a radius the top edge of the VIS or should I send this back to Springfield for repair?

The gun has 2500 rounds (130 power factor) through it, 10 lbs recoil spring, and a GI guide rod.

It's hard to tell from your picture, but I would suggest you lightly chamfer the corner of the VIS where your arrow is pointing, and see if it stops. Normally, the corner on the VIS is chamfered more than shown on these installs, and the barrel has a fillet to add strength and stop any stress cracks. If it continues to get worse, or if you don't want to change anything, I'd call Springfield customer service.

I fully agree with DonW...Normally, a ramped barrel is fitted and has
the frame VIS area radii or chamfered to 45 degrees or so, specifically
to avoid peening and/or stress cracking...

If the pistol is under warranty I would return it to the factory for warranty
work, you should not have to pay a GS out of your pocket for something
the factory should have done before it left the factory.

Good luck.

Send those pics to Springfield. I'm pretty sure that they will issue a call tag even if the gun has 20,000 rounds through it. There should be a chamfer on the corner and a small radius on the barrel lug where your arrows are pointing. That mushroomed metal on the barrel tells me that the fit ain't right.

I spoke with Springfield's customer service this morning. They weren't sure if this was a problem (or maybe they didn't understand the issue). They asked that I send the photos to them before they would issue me an RMA and a shipping tag. Hopefully I will hear back from them soon. I'm pretty sure if I keep shooting it in this condition I am going to crack the barrel lug.

There should be ZERO contact on the corner. Only on the front and top face. There needs to be a relief cut made that's about .050 wide on the transition.

I finally got an RMA number from Springfield today. I have to say I'm a little disappointed that it took them 2 weeks to decide to look at it.

I agree, when one of my Kimber's went south on me Kimber emailed me a RMA and UPS prepaid shipping while I was talking to them on the phone.
