on target Custom Gunworks, goggle it, good info. My experience is to take your time, practice, practice & practice somemore before putting a file to a gun. Jim Garthwaite in his 1911 class teaches using 1" x 1 1/2 alum blocks, cheap an easy to work with.
Since you have DemBart tools I suspect that you're talking about checkering wood not metal.
If so practice on a piece of Maple or some other hard wood before checkering your grips. Please remember, never in the history of man, has a checkering job turned out perfectly the first time.
Wood checkering is a lot of fun, but takes time, patience and practice. I enjoy doing it, but is waaaayyyyy too time consuming to do it for a customer. Let me know if you have any questions!
