Why no signatures or avatars?

I looked in the FAQ before posting this, and saw no reference.

I find it challenging to easily identify certain posters (who's advice I may look forward to, or know to ignore) by their posts because no one has any individual identifiers such as an avatar, or a signature image attached to their posts.

I post on 8 different forums (not all gun related) and all of them use one of these or both.

Is it a bandwidth thing? Perhaps making it a selectable option in the user's CP (as it is on many other forums using this software) so those who DON'T like to see sig images or avatars can select NOT to see any, or for those, like me, who want to... can turn them on.

Heck, sometimes I can't even find MY OWN post in a long thread.

I'd like to be able to make my posts look like this one with an auto signature (or at least a small avatar under our names).

Thanks for listening.

You are allowed a five line signature as is every member of the board. As far as Avatars, I'm glad we do not have them.

Thanks for the response.

But in our profile it will not allow us to insert any image tag into our signature.

And... actually the Staff and mods DO have avatars. I would assume so that we can all easily identify you? (hint, hint)

:-)

Oh, and while I have your attention... has multi-quote been considered? This way we can more easily quote more than one member in a thread.

Thanks again.

Agreed. I wouldn't mind doing a site supporter type of thing for some extra perks. As well as funding the site to reduce downtime (I seem to get that a lot when I try to log in here).

Mark,I'm glad we don't have them too.

Bandit,I've been on forums (mostly musclecar forums) that allow signatures like the one you show in the first post, and it seems like there's more avatars and sig lines than there is useful information.

That can be done:

I am glad we don't have avatars or allow pictures in the signatures at the bottom of the posts. I just wish that the members with signatures longer than 5 lines would bring them in to accord with the forum's rule - 5 lines or less.

That makes me wonder what you mean by "get involved"... I have no idea who owns this forum, but why would he not be involved with such a great thing?

I really dont care about avatars myself, but you made me wonder about the future of the forum if the owner isnt "involved".

Could you explain this please?

From what i can tell the owners are basically AWOL and the mods/admin are just keeping things running

Nine times out of ten avatars turn out to be just pics of annoying crap anyway. But if we did have them, I agree it should be for paying members only.

One day there will be some edited signatures with a big 5 LINES OR LESS where the signature had been.

I just tested the check box that controls the showing of signatures. It's in the User CP on the options page. It works. Perhaps this feature should be more well known so those members who wish not to see all the sig lines wouldn't have to. Having a five line limit might not be the best limiting method as computer monitor resolution can make the text line count different. I've seen my sig text displayed as only 3 lines on a monitor set to very high resolution. On my monitor right now my sig line is 3 1/2 lines. Perhaps having a character limit might be more effective.

+1 - I agree! Seems some users mis-use the privilege and use 'over-sized' avatar images that are an eyesore and break the threads by making them wider and hard to read, if a user has screen res set to certain sizes - those over-sized images make threads very difficult to even read, and find the information they are looking for.

When viewed from my 12.1" screen laptop, your sig line is only 1 3/4 lines! Probably have my screen resolution a bit high...

(You have one of those small, non-distracting sig lines that I actually bother to read sometimes - makes me feel not as big a gun-whore as I think I am.)

Mods do a great job as far as I'm concerned. I had my sig line stretched out ----8 lines IIRC. They pulled me up and I corrected it. I wish more people would abide by the forum rules. In a lot of ways, I'm glad we don't have avatars. They take away from the professional way and looks this site has and is maintained. I think the owner pays enough attention to this site to keep it running comfortably. I just wish he'd start accepting donations. This site means a lot to me and it just feels like I'm stealing from it and not getting caught. Wish I could give back some way. Tracy
