Interesting slide mark...

From a post on FB...guy wanting to know what this "D44" slide mark is. Thought I might learn something here...

Initially i thought it might be a rack number to facilitate ease of inventory. Then it occurred to me the number is on the slide, not appropriate for pistol accountability.
I've not seen the marking before. If someone knows, I'll learn something too.
