Malware alerts on this site

Lately it appears many members have been getting warnings from their anti-virus programs about potentially malicious content when visiting this site. The 1911 Forum staff is aware of it and working towards solutions, but it appears the source of these warnings is from the advertising banners. Unfortunately this is not an uncommon occurrence these days, and I personally have received similar warnings when visiting local news sites, other enthusiast-based forums, and any other website that relies on advertising banners for revenue. In the meantime the best thing you can do is make sure you are running a current anti-virus application on your PC that does real-time scans. The following programs are recommended for PC users:

Avast! Antivirus
Kaspersky
AVG
Microsoft Security Essentials
Aviria Antivirus

If you are a Macintosh user Avast, Panda, and Trend Micro are usually highly recommended.

Most of these programs are either free or else have a free version with limited features. Just make sure to only choose one anti-virus program, because several running at once on your computer will interfere with each other and slow your system down. There are also versions for Android and other mobile users, but it's best to go to your individual apps store to find them.

Additionally, there are programs that specifically deal with spyware, not viruses, and they can be installed and run in addition to normal antivirus software. Malwarebytes, Spybot, and Super Anti-Spyware are three free ones that do a fairly decent job catching whatever your anti-virus software missed.

Make sure also to use a program that will do a boot scan of your PC, which will catch a lot of stuff before Windows even loads. Like I said Avast is a pretty good free one, and it has the ability to do boot scans as well. Kaspersky is a paid program, but it comes with a rescue disk application that will scan your PC completely outside of Windows using a Linux-based program as well as a rootkit virus removal tool.

Norton and McAfee used to be good ten years ago, but their software has become bloated and does nothing but slow your PC down. Eventually most malware will simply turn them off without you realizing it, and you'll think they're working but in reality they're letting all the crap through. You'll know you're infected when you look in your Add/Remove programs directory and see a bunch of new programs and toolbars you never remember saying yes to.

Two more things: a lot of malware has been getting through security holes in older versions of Java, so make sure you've got the latest version 7 and that all previous versions have been uninstalled. If you go into Add/Remove programs you may see version 6 still installed, which has so many security flaws that even the government came out with a warning to get rid of it off your PC.

Second, a lot of viruses get in because you're logged into a Windows user account with administrator privileges. Create a new "limited" user account without admin privileges and do your web surfing and bill paying in that. Log into the administrator account only when you want to install new programs or change Windows settings. If you're logged in to an administrator account all the time it's that much easier for malicious software to make changes under the hood without you realizing it.

Avoid the temptation to replace everything on your brand-new 1911 just to make it "better". Know what you're changing out and why. You may spend a lot of money fixing things that weren't broken to begin with. Shoot at least 500 rounds through it first, then decide what you don't like and want to improve. Regarding vintage 1911s, pre-1970 pistols are highly collectible in original, unaltered condition and should NEVER be refinished or modified as it completely ruins their monetary value.
