Rear site removal question

On the Smith 1911, the firing pin safety plunger sits under the rear sight. How do you remove the adjustable rear sights on the S&W 1911? Is it just a matter of pressing it out off the slide, or is there a set screw hidden in there somewhere?

Thanks

I couldn't find any info about it, so I just started carefully taking things apart....

Start out by removing the large elevation screw from the top of the rear sight. It actually threads through the sight and into the slide and firing pin channel. Next, fold the rear sight blade up being mindful not to lose the two small springs on the underside. You will now need to loosen two tiny allen screws in the sight base that must there just to keep things lined up for assembly. Now the sight can be pressed out to the right. As the sight just about clears the dovetail, the plunger assembly for the firing pin safety is exposed in the slide. That assembly consists of a flat round cover plate, a small spring, and the plunger itself. I had already removed the firing pin, so the plunger came out freely.

Hopefully this will help out the next guy....

Yup, you nailed it! This is similar to the setup on their third series of 45XXamd 59xx series.
