First-Time Gun Buyers Explain How Coronavirus Changed Their Politics

Quote:
An influx of new gun owners has the potential to permanently alter the politics surrounding guns in the United States. If industry estimates are correct, millions of Americans across the country have become first-time gun buyers since March. If the experience changes their minds about the ongoing debate over gun control it could tip the balance of political power toward pro-gun activists and politicians.

I will take partial credit... for someone I know (of Asian descent) just purchasing his first several firearms. His motivation also came from cv19 and reports of biases very similar to the story. In the 3-4 years i know him, he has heard more than several times, me rip apart anti 2A stories from the MSM. After he asked me, “how do I buy a gun”, (I smiled) , he then experienced first hand the ridiculous beaurocratic nonsense we go through in NJ. He saw how he was delayed, blocked from getting fingerprinted for a required FID card. (Murphy shut them down). I gave him email addresses to some pro 2A organizations, and he was emailing away voicing his displeasure in the process. To which, I’d smile again and help guide him in is next steps, ie calling his local PD and NJSP firearm division. Pistol purchase permits were also delayed an extra 45 days.
Once they went through and he made a purchase, he had No place to shoot, which is where we are now. In the end, I know he has a new appreciation for his 2A rights and when someone tries to take them.

That’s a good shot to the hip!
Finally, some of the converts have come to the realization that there really is a threat, not only of government overreach, but that there are people that want to take your stuff. The fairy tale “free lunch” mentality has faded with some. Others just get high and wait for free stuff......

Some good news. But I am sure those first time buyers in anti-gun states are shocked when they discover all the hoops they have to jump through before they can take a gun home, much less buy ammo for it too. They wanted the anti-gun laws now they are stuck with the laws too.

New gun buyers in CA are getting a hell of a surprise. They find out they can't take it with them, not even if they pay the gun store owner more $$$. That they have to take a test just to buy, that their CDL and CID really isn't much of an ID, even if it is a "Real ID". That they need additional residence info. And no, you can't buy any of those nice new guns you saw in the gun magazine and you can't just "buy online". Among other things.

To be honest, I didn't get the big rush to buy guns because of the COVID. Earthquake, civil unrest - OK, makes sense. So when I asked someone (who didn't know I own) his response was interesting.

He figured a) why wait until things get really bad b) by the time they did he wouldn't be able to get one quick and c) given how CA politicians treat guns he wasn't certain he'd be able to get one.

It would be nice to think these new gunowners would change their voting habits. Maybe a few, but by and large - no change.

That is fantastic! Congratulations on helping to introduce a new member to the gun rights community. I completely understand his main reason for becoming interested, but as time goes by he'll learn how much fun shooting is, in addition to the practical side. To paraphrase the motto of Pink Pistols, "Armed Asians don't get bashed."

Stay safe, Emily

This right here. How many of the “new” gun owners are the typical hypocrite liberals (like dem politicians and Hollywood types) who think its ok for them to own a gun but no one else should? I agree with you, I wouldn’t put too much faith in a majority of them suddenly becoming hard core pro-2A, NRA members and voting republican.

Ostracize them and the answer is none. Invest a little bit into them and you may be surprised. No one makes a life altering decision quickly. Converting an anti gun to a pro gun, dem to a rep, vegan to a hunter, etc. is a process... Most of them have been lied to so much they believe the dem party lines... allow them to discover the truth and you may just get them over to our side.

And at this point in history, we need all the votes we can get, even if only a few at a time.
