Reliable 10mm 16-40 magazine

Anybody know of a good source for para p16-40 10mm mags? I modified 40 s&w mags by shaving the feed lips back and they work ok but still get FTF sometimes. Thanks

I use the old Para Canadian 16-40 mags (un modified) and they work fine. Best way is to keep putting adds on Armslist and eventually you will find some. Don't expect overnight success :-)

JohnKII,
Could you clarify, have you used P 16-40 mags and find they aren't working for 10mm?

Before I go any further, I want to add the disclaimer that I am in the same boat as you, and have yet to get my 6" longslide top end to feed reliably on a double-stack frame. I am trying to solve this same issue, and have not yet figured out the problem. I can get two or three feeds, before I get a jam feeding. I have not yet tried altering the feedramp for the barrel, as the same slide and barrel work flawlessly on a single stack frame with Checkmate 10mm mags.
-------------------------------------------------------

The Mecgar mags have very stiff springs. I do not know for a fact that this could contribute to the issue you are having feeding 10mm out of them. In theory it should just work.

The other difference between some manufactures of these DS mags is the actual height into the chamber that they set at. Some just set lower. I'd assume that for 10mm's longer OAL, higher (less angle) would be better for feeding using the .40 magazines.

I'd have to take a look and see,. but if memory serves, the new Remington DS mags ride the highest into the chamber.

I'm not aware of a need to modify the mags for 10mm, in fact I gambled on that theory based on many anecdotes I found on the 'net, this one in particular;

"History lesson: In 1991, Para Ordnance made a full size 10mm. They dropped it due to lack of sales after the first year. (If you find a factory original 10mm, get out your kid's college fund, they are pricey.) Anyways, when they dropped the 10mm, instead of retooling their mag makers and followers(for lack of a better term) they just decided to use the same specs for the 10mm mags for the P16-40 series and the P1x-40 series pistols after that. ALL PARA ORDNANCE P16-40 MAGS WILL WORK WITH 10MM WITH NO MODS. "

In addition, every one that I have found on these forums that has a working Para 10mm D.S. is using unaltered mags.

I've tried mags from 4 different manufactures, Mecgar, Remington, Triple K, and 4 different original Para-Ordnance made in Canada, and none are feeding 10mm reliably on my otherwise perfectly functional 16-40 Para frame.

ACT mag OEMP164015B works perfectly with my 6" long slide on BO double stack frame, Clark 10mm barrel.

Ok an addition to the magazines I had another problem. I had a new fusion 10mm barrel (excellent drop in barrel) I noticed that the slide was really cycling slowly. There was a flat on the upper lugs of the para slide gouging into the barrel. I took some 400 grit sandpaper & hit that flat spot. I polished the barrel hood lightly and ran 2 full mags of 180 gr 1200fps rated ammo. No failures however there was still a slight drag on the barrel so I hit the flat on the slide again. I have not had a chance to shoot the firearm but am optimistic I am on to something. Will let you know. I would like to get 300 rounds through the mags to verify they work. May be a while for that since ammo is in short supply. Keep shooting my friends.

JohnkII,

I too have converted my 16-40 to 10mm and have mecgar mags with the same issue of feed reliablity. I’ve reemed out a 40 barrel and is a tack driver. I’ve noticed a big difference in feed ramp on my Commander 10mm barrel compared to the one for the 16-40. I know the mecgar mags are cheep, but willing to do a little dremal work and polish feed ramp for my reemed out 40 to see if that helps feed the much longer 10mm loads. Maybe this weekend.

P16 40

Have P16-40 that has a 10mm barrel fitted to it. I use factory P16 mags and STI/Para mags that feed 10mms ammo without a problem.

I got another chance to put rounds thru. Worked well aside from a couple slide stop failures. I used 1200fps 180 grain and 1350fps 180 grain with and without a compensator. No FTF or FTE. Mag feed lips trimmed to 0.59 (maybe more but hard to measure) range, sharp edges broken polished lightly and untrimmed inside of lips polished with polishing compound and Dremel. Right now I say a win. Still think a 300 round test is the best.
