Considering a DW near me, but is their customer service really bad?

There's a sweet VBOB in stainless near me at a price I can swing if I trade my Springfield Champion (or maybe even if I don't).

But the tales I'm hearing from their customer service range from "can't even get them on the phone" through "they've made a customer for life."

I'm a Springfield fan, so I'm used to Springfield's world class customer service.

What has been your experience with Dan Wesson, both in the quality of the guns and customer service, just in case?

I have 4 Valors, a 45ACP purchased in 2011, and 3 9mms purchased from 2017-2019. All have been functionally perfect. My only experience with DW customer service was to have the height of the front sight on a Custom they built for me in 2019. Turnaround was less than 10 days.
If DW made a 1911 I wanted, I wouldn’t hesitate to buy it.

The same range of cs reviews can be found for Springfield as well. Like Springfield, the majority say that DW cs is great.

I have two 1911s an CCO and a recently purchased ECO, both are great guns the ECO had to be broken in until the slide would reliably close a few hundred rounds called service two or three times for advice when necessary they called back.

I don't think I would pay close to 2K for a DW I know some are in that range at that price I would go the extra and buy a Les Baer or better.

This one is new and I was quoted $1399.00. It's discontinued (V-BOB), so I don't know if that gives me negotiation room or not.

I wouldn't pay $1,400 I think there's one on addicts for $1,250 that you could get for less is my guess

I'd have no problem with that price for a new V-Bob.

My Valor Commander has been flawless in every way....fit, finish, feel, trigger pull, etc.

I've had nothing but positive experiences with Dan Wesson. I had several questions concerning aspects of the pistol, finish and etc. They replied to my emails and follow up questions. They even had customer service & gunsmith reply back to the same emails with further information.

I couldn't imagine better experiences than that.

I feel confident enough in them that I'm moving forward with buying a 2nd Dan Wesson 1911 at this time.

I don't know how we could ask for better made 1911's. Superior fit & finish, superior internals that are well fitted and after-the-sale support.

If you'll read some of the negative stuff that's posted.....read it very carefully...you may come away doubting the poster's gun knowledge and motives. Owner/poster’s attempts to resolve issues are often left sounding vague, insincere and lacking effort.

Just my two cents.

I've never had a bad customer service experience with any firearm company. As long as you're polite, they'll most likely be polite.

I can't say that I have, either. Springfield is excellent and back when I had my Colt Defender, Colt was also outstanding.

Go for the DW and highly likely you'll never need CS. If you do, post here and folks from DW will pick this up and most times reply and help you. My new 9mm Silverback became my new favorite and going for it's first USPSA match next weekend. That be fun. The gun is a real performer, smooth as glass and pretty to look at. It compares to 1911s at way higher price points.

There's something about the aesthetics of a Les Baer that turn me away. I'm not sure, it just looks blocky to me. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure they're about as good as it gets quality-wise, but the looks just don't work for me.

They are not "as good as it gets quality-wise" in my opinion.

Don't get me wrong....the LB CC Commanche I had was a nice pistol and very dang accurate....but I feel the Valor Commander that I replaced it with is a higher quality pistol.

Thanks for the input. The Dan Wessons definitely win in the looks department with me.

I also learned something else over the weekend. I learned that I do indeed like a bobtail grip. I wasn't sure because I had never handled one before, but it definitely felt great to me.

People seem to either love them or hate them. It's "love" for me, plus it should conceal a bit better.

I find the quality of my two DWs outstanding, accurate, well made and with excellent triggers. I personally won't bother with lesser brands in future purchases (but I have a safe full of 1911s). I routinely outshoot my dad's Wilson CQB with either of my DWs, but that's likely more about familiarity than anything else.

I've had cause to use DWs CS for a minor issue and they we're fine, prompt replies to my query and got the gun back quickly.

More recently a relative bought a SS VBob that locked up from galling (a common issue you may want to be aware of) and they had it back to him within two weeks and it runs like a top now.

I have needed no CS on my 2 DW's but the contact I did need to make for the custom options I asked for was always replied to promptly. I think the issues that you have read about here constitute less than 5% of buyers and I think a percentage of that is the customers issue with communication or expectations.

Something else to consider is the 5 year warranty is only offered to the original purchaser.

I don't know if I would call it a "common issue," but I do think it happens more often than it should.

Dumb question: what is galling? I think I've heard the term.

I’ve had 21 Dan Wessons since 2012.

I had to use customer service once for the Specialist I carried on duty after the right-side safety worked loose after 7,000 rounds or so. They replaced the safety for free, and did the work very quickly.

I’ve also used them a few times to replace front sights for a different height sights. They did this for free each time, and turn around was usually around a week.

I appreciate all of the great advice, everyone. I've decided for now to hold off on the Dan Wesson and instead ordered a Wilson Round Butt MSH for the Champion. This gun has been flawless and deserves a bit more upgrading.

I haven't written the DW off, though. It's a very fine gun and it's still on my "someday" list. I'm also starting to warm up to Les Baer somewhat.

Anytime I needed anything from DW regarding parts, custom services, or minor warranty issues, I have been made to feel like I was the only customer they had. Given how consistent the excellent CS has been, it really makes me wonder when I hear complaints. As we know there are two sides to every story. That said, I'm sure some complaints are valid, not everyone can get CS 100% right every time. People are hard to please. But I'm sure any bad CS reviews are very much the minority of CS experiences overall. Like 98% positive and 2% bad. it's the 2% that make the most noise.

If everyone who had a good CS experience with DW posted a thread here, I suspect the DW forum would be filled with nothing but positive CS threads.

Well said.

The folks saying they "couldn't get anyone to respond to the from DW" leave me scratching my head.

Monday night I sent them a message via their "contact us" link on their webpage. I had questions about some customizations I'm considering on a new DW 1911 that I'm buying.

Tuesday afternoon I log ito my email....and there is a reply from Shawn who also provided me contact info for Endre. My questions were answered right then and there.

I'm proceeding with confidence that I'll be very satisfied with the new gun.
