Stan Chen

In this site there an ad about Stan Chen, and It got me thinking if some of you own one of them and is willing to give me some info in how they like it. I own a WC, EB and LB, but never tried one of this custom 1911, I was looking at some videos about Acuraccy, I’m not sure about prices of these 1911’s. I’m not a professional shooter or a big shooter(more of a collector), but I want it to try some hi end 1911’s and end up buying 4, and now I’m wondering about quality and prices on these customs. Thanks

I wish I had one! The pictures I've seen from his website are amazing. I hear the wait is a few years.

I sent them an email requesting info, and the response was, he is not accepting deposits at this time and the wait is 5 years.

Your Chen 1911 and your Randall #1 knife will arrive in 2024.

Or... Do what I did: Bought my Randall on the secondary market. It was perfect. And more expensive than waiting by around $100.

Got it the day I called the dude. So find your Stan Chen, used, today.

Or just wait until Toyota Camrys fly and Miley Cyrus is President. Your call.

I buy a Randall every year. It took 5 yrs to get the pipeline full, but now I have a Randal come to the house every yr.

I might do that with a custom 1911. Order a Chen this yr....a Harrison next yr....then a Rogers......then a Derr.......before you know it.....the pipeline is full and then I get a new custom 1911 every year.

I'm liking this idea.......

TRSOtto------- Yes, That's a valid way to go. Start now & in a few years Christmas will start coming at random times throughout the year.

Hemicolt1911------- There may be a Chen or two for sale out there. Just gotta look.

I don't think I've seen one available, used or new. I think Stan's are some of the most elusive 1911s on the market.

From my experience with other high end makers, sometimes they maintain private email lists. If one of their clients decides to let one go, others get notifications before the gun gets to the open market. Which rarely happens. Maybe email Stan and ask. He's done some work for me and he is a very pleasant and approachable person.

This is a great approach; unfortunately Stan's queue is full and he is not accepting any new orders according to the OP. From the pictures I've seen on this site, if I were wanting to get in the pipeline for a full custom like this, I would start with an order with Greg Derr, then perhaps John Harrison or Jason Burton, and in the meantime pick up a shorter wait pistol from a semi-custom like Wilson, Brown, GI, Alchemy, or Baer to satisfy the "itch". That's just me though.

Decisions, decisions..........LOL!!!!

Back in August, I ordered a Baer Mono Hvy in .45. I already have them in 38S and 9mm. Baer called today to let me know the gun is at prep for blueing....so about 2 more weeks....

That oughta satisfy the "itch" for a while......

Magazinema- I will be looking, thanks for the advice but if it is that hard to buy from him I’m sure it will be just as hard to find a used one. I was just wondering what his guns compared with(I know custom gun is unique) but is it just the pride to own one of his guns or other gunsmiths? Because like I said I got a rock island that shoot just as good as my Dan Wesson and Les baer in 9mm as I’m no a big shooter but it feels good to have a semi custom 1911 😄 and I can probably say that any gun will shoot better than me (there’s no way I will shoot 3” groups at 50 yds,”maybe one hit out of 2 magazines&#x1f602.

YVK— that’s an option, thanks. But in the mean time I would like to know about his work in how it makes it more special than a Wilson Combat? I know one is custom vs semi, just looking for recommendations from owner and maybe explain why a Custom one?(not necessary a Chen).

Love it. Virtually no recoil thanks to the Mono Hvyweight frame. Same Baer like accuracy as in his .45's. Same bank vault tight lockup.

TRSOtto- I got a .45 years ago and I was trying to get a full size in 9mm but no luck in websites. Luckily one of the local dealers had one(I guess the only one in US in that size) but had to pay a little more than usual online and I had to get it otherwise I was going to pay more ones Les send more out(over $2800). And I love mine too, is way more tighter than any other of my 1911’s, is that why has a little more recoil than my DW pm9?

It's hard to say. Perceived recoil is just SOOO subjective......

I have looked from time to time. There used to be one or two that were ordered for future delivery, on one web site. You had to wait for the pistol to be built. These disappeared as the delivery date got closer.

HemiColt1911...

You might try contacting Terry Peters, at PT Partners. He used to maintain a spot in the que of several custom makers; you could purchase the spot, if I recall correctly, and shave a bit off the wait time. I don't know if that is still an option or not, but it's worth a call.

Terry is a good, honest man to deal with.

The aesthetics of Stan's work is top notch. I really like the herringbone pattern on the slide top. I've searched the internet but have only seen 2 or 3 pistols custom pistols he has made. I'm sure there's many more, but photos just don't come up in an internet search. I'm on his waiting list for any custom pistol he makes and decides to sell.

I've got a WC with his SI Magwell installed.

I don't know why my photos load upside down. If you right click on the photo and then click "open in new tab" , it loads properly.
