Remington R1 Special Runs?

How common is it for Remington to have off catalog offerings? My LGS advertised an R1 Enhanced Commander Special Run for $500. Sounded like a deal, so I picked one up yesterday as my first 1911 and also got 50 rounds of PMC Bronze ball ammo thrown in with the deal. The SKU is 96247 and only returned two hits when Googled.

As it turns out, it was labeled a Carry Commander and looks like a mashup of the Carry and Enhanced Commander models. Carry Commander frame, slide, and ambi safety with the grips and sights from the Enhanced model, and 2 7 round flush fit mags. The barrel and bushing are black oxide, but a chat with Remington confirmed it was the match grade advertised on the rest of the product line.

During that chat, I noticed a $50 MIR from Remington starting today, so I'm hoping the LGS will do a refund & immediate repurchase. All in all, I'm pretty happy with it and like the configuration even more than what I thought I'd be getting.

Congratulations. It seems like you got a really great price. I never knew of that gun until your post. I looked at a picture of one on-line and it appears to be akin to a "night watch" or "blackout" version of a normal Carry Commander with the black grips, trigger, barrel, and bushing on it as well as a front fiber optic sight. The only place I've seen them being sold is H&H Sport Shop in Minnesota. Did your LGS get you squared away to get the $50.00 rebate? If so, you essentially got a Carry Commander, albeit with a front fiber optic sight, for $450.00 plus tax, etc. Pretty nice.

I have a Carry Commander by Remington for about 2 years with perhaps 1,000 rounds thru it. It is one of my favorite pistols to shoot. I don't remember the exact price that I paid but it was at least $150 more than yours. I have never had any malfunctions with it. I really like it!

I didn't try due to time constraints on my part. They are only letting a few people in the store at a time, and there is usually a line. Still happy with my purchase, and even happier when I looked closer at the ammo they included this weekend and noticed it was JHP instead of the FMJ I mistakenly thought it was.

It's a great price. That gun has some really nice features for the money you paid. Let us know how it shoots.

I came very very close to buying one of those several years ago. I picked one up at several gun shows and was quite impressed with it. By the time I came around to try to pick one up, they were all gone.
