It's not necessarily about threath assessment, it can also be problem management if you have a magazine failure of some sort. I've seen mag failures on almost every brand and type of pistol at matches. Even a HK USP mag failed once. I personally usually feel fine with 8 rounds of .45 but I carry a spare in case the mag chokes as much as for more rounds.
