For those few of you who load the 255 gr lead SWC in 45 ACP for the 1911 I would like your experience with reliability. I know it is used in competition ie Pin Matches, but I am thinking more of SD or hunting. How reliable is it in your experience? By reliable I mean FTF, or other gun malfunctions.

I have loaded them in the past just to see if they would work OK. They fed just fine and were very accurate also. I tested them in a full-size, commander-size, and Defender (3"). IIRC, the OAL the worked for me was a little shorter than I expected, but still the bullet shoulder was about .030" above the case mouth.

Thanks. I am thinking of getting either 255 gr SWC from either Rimrock or Penn. I need to find out from Robert P what the meplat is on his SWC to see if it is bigger than Rimrock's version. As an aside I found out via e-mail that Rimrock makes the 255 gr FP for Buffalo Bore's +P ammo at 925 fps, but the meplat is smaller than their SWC of the same weight.

Mine are reliable enough that 2 yrs ago I got a 10K order. Other than the NRA Action Pistol (powder puff loads w/230 rnl), I haven't loaded or shot anything else. I've prob got a total of 50K+ 255gr rds thru all my guns. I've got a total of approx 15 malfs with them in the beginning while I was figuring out the oal. All my guns like 1.175-1.190....right at or just below the crimp groove.

The Penn version is a larger meplat than the Rimrock
