They do that. I had a 64 1/2 convertible (260, generator) as my daily driver back in the mid-'70s - it was pretty much used up when I got it for $500 but I did manage to drive it for a few years...

The AR is subject to this more than other rifles but it doesn't have to be this way. You usually can check your mags for full-load bind against the closed action by simply loading them one at a time...

That is a refinished pre-war GM mag. Notice the two pins at the base to retain the floor plate, the sandblasted base and the 'squashed' font. That one could have come on a 'commercial to military'.

Replace the recoil spring with a new 16# and put in an extra-power firing pin spring. These come as a set from Wolff Springs. All the other springs should be pretty much 'forever' unless corroded....

Did you get the FEG new? Maybe it has had a slide or slide stop replacement. I assume it works okay when firing by locking the slide back on an empty mag? If so, I wouldn't mess with it.
