Both Colt and S&W have let go their craftsmen long ago and there hasn't been anything in place to train new people the art of gunsmithing (yes it is an Art) so the Colts and S&W's so many have loved...

No grease. No lube. I will wipe down the exterior to keep it clean and on occasion go over the inside of the tube with a tooth brush for unburned particles/soot.
Haven't had a problem in 50 years....
