Ditto here with 'smith messing up finish on the slide. When I pointed it out he said "it's painted". The factory finish is something like duracoat or cerakote.

Velocities out of a 1970s Python are slow compared a S&W 586 made these days, if I'm not mistaken. Maybe someone will chime in...

If I'm not mistaken, the Brits are anti-gun even by European standards. In the past a pistol team had to train outside the country for competition. I don't know if it is still like that.
