I guess that depends on what you are using it for.My 500 is a hunting shotgun. My 590 is a "combat" shotgun. It has fun things on it like a bayonet lug, ghost ring sights and it holds 8 rounds.Mechnically I think they are pretty much the same. The 590 is just more fun

590 is kickass, I saw it at a gun show a few weeks ago and wished I didn't have an 870. I'd get it.

590!

Just picked myself up a Mossberg Marinecote 590 with the vented handguard & synthetic stock.

I have to say that for combat or home defense, the added magazine capacity of the 590 seems to be a better deal.

Plus, it looks reallllllly cool. Now I'm trying to decide between the Hogue synthetic (soft) stock w/recoil buffer or the SpeedFeed stock for a few extra rounds...

I'll agree the 590 is better, but I have a 500 I bought eons ago that was a package- 28"VR barrel (fer sportin' use), wood stock and forearm, but also a 18.5" CB barrel and pistol grip. I replaced the forearm with a black ribbed plastic one, and have kept it like that with the wood stock but a thick slip-on recoil pad as well. While I wish it had better sights for defense, I can say it most certainly fills the role just fine. I think that in a tactical situation I likely won't ever get a chance to pump and fire more than five 12ga shells. That, and my M4 is the main defense gun anyway. No, I won't get a chance to let loose 30 rounds either, but it sure makes me sleep better!

Try not to fall into the common trap of wanting to replace everything on your new 1911 just to make it "better". Know what you're changing out, and why. You may spend a lot of money fixing things that weren't broken to begin with. Shoot it for at least 500 rounds, then decide what you don't like and want improved. Vintage 1911's should NEVER be refinished or modified because it ruins any value they had as a collectible firearm.

though you probably wouldnt break the 500, it is an aluminum receiver and the 590 is steal, like the 870. I would stick to either the 590 or the 870. There seems to be more gagets for the 870 and it is the choice of most police departments.

I have both the 590 and 870 police.

I carry the 870P for duty but have both set up with Ghost sights and Surefire lights.

You can't go wrong with either one!

If you find one for a good price........get it!!!!!!! Excellent Weapon!

As long as we're talking 590's....

There's also the 590-A1.

The A1 version replaces the plastic trigger housing and thumb safety of the standard 590 with metal parts.

The 590 is a great shotgun. Pretty much bomb proof.

I sure like mine.
