Cost to replace MIM in Colt vs. Springfield?
Can someone please give me a cost estimate of how much it would be to replace the MIM parts in a new Colt 1991 pistol vs. a Springfield Mil Spec pistol? The cost of replacing these parts will be a major factor in my decision of which pistol to purchase. I understand the SA pistol has more MIM, but it is also cheaper to buy initially, while the Colt may cost more but has fewer MIM parts. I don't want to start a debate on pros and cons of MIM, I only want facts in terms of cost to replace these parts in both pistols.
What is a fair price for a new 1991 with blue finish? There is a local shop here that has a 1991 and they want $795. That sounds WAY high. Thanks. Last edited by TRBON8R; 11-12-2004 at 03:53 PM. |

$795 for a Colt 5" blue series 80 GM is way high, you could buy a new series 70's for that price, an average price for the basic 1991 would be around $550....
I bought mine at http://www.sportingarms.com/ with shipping, FFL transfer and price of gun, It was home for $596.... Last edited by part_time; 11-12-2004 at 04:00 PM. |

Thanks part time. Something I forgot to mention, can the series 80 firing pin contraption on the new pistols be scrapped and returned to series 70 configuration? My plan is to build a racegun so I plan on doing some parts swaping anyway. Thanks.

On a Springfield, in addition to the above parts you would also need to replace the slide stop, thumb safety, barrel bushing and firing pin stop.

Try not to fall into the common trap of wanting to replace everything on your new 1911 just to make it "better". Know what you're changing out, and why. You may spend a lot of money fixing things that weren't broken to begin with. Shoot it for at least 500 rounds, then decide what you don't like and want improved. Vintage 1911's should NEVER be refinished or modified because it ruins any value they had as a collectible firearm. |
