BHP or (another) Beretta 92FS?
I had a Beretta 92FS previously but traded it for a CMP M1 Garand.....great deal! Now, I have the itch for another full size 9mm Hi-Cap.
I love the 92FS! I love everything about it, all the safety features, mag capacity, size and accuracy. I want a modern 9mm and I can appreciate all the safety features of the 92FS, decocking, chamber loaded indicator, ect.....but then again, I've always wanted a BHP and have been kicking myself ever since missing out on the Israeli BHP's from AIM. Only real advantage the 92FS has are the modern safety features...... BTW, no more guns after this purchase. Just bought a Colt 1991 NRM Commander but want a 9mm again. Thoughts? |

Between the Beretta and the BHP my personal opinion would be the Beretta. The build on the Beretta IMO is better, and its more comfortable to me.
I've never shot a BHP, and I imagine it to be quite fun, and I have shot a Beretta (and couldn't shoot s*** w/ it), but if you can shoot accurately w/ the Beretta I would prefer the 92FS over the BHP. Now... If I can suggest a DIFFERENT 9mm, I'd name the Sig P226

HP,hands down.THey fit the hand so nice and can be carried cocked and locked. You can find magazines for good prices, they hold the edge in accuracy, easily as reliable and aren't so big in the grip/trigger reach.
My opinion anyways...

Here's another twist on Beretta 92's.....
92FS or 92 Compact L? I've been taking a long, hard look at the 92 Compact and it looks like a good deal with the smaller size and 13rd mag capacity. Does anyone have experience with this pistol? Thoughts on the 92 Compact? BTW, I have small hands..... |

Browning Hi-Power.
The Beretta is an un-necessarily large platform for the 9x19mm. The balance, handling & point qualities of the BHP are excellent. For a 9X19mm general purpose service pistol the BHP is about as good as it gets. |

Of this type of pistol, the HP is tops! It's very slim, easy to operate, and looks great. The Beretta is very large, and can be confusing trying to figure out the safety/ decocker. It seems to operate backwards from instincts. The Sigs certainly have a following but they too are bulky. At least they don't confuse me with their mechanisms.

I love my beretta 92. A great shooter with an excellent fit for a factory gun.
Here is another complication to consider. I know you said no more guns, but, listen to this. You can go get a beretta 92 for around $500-550 (out here anyway, not sure about your region). In a few months, Charles Daley will be putting out a high power at or near the $400-450 price mark. That means two guns for $900-1000. I'm sure you've spent near that one ONE gun before...its not hard anymore. I'm looking at the highpower too. But only because I already have the beretta. Brian |

Of course, the BHP is a real classic gun. It has it all: looks, accuracy, reliability, high capacity (hi-caps mags available from CDNN at very reasonable prices), and is full of history as well.
I picked up a used Hi-Power about 3 years ago, a Mark III made in 1994. Its finish was almost flawless, and was priced at $399 plus tax and NIC fee. I jumped on it, and never looked back. I DID have to get a trigger job done on the Hi-Power, however. Its pull was about 9 or 10 pounds, so this was unacceptable. I also had the goofy magazine safety removed at the same time. Now its trigger is 4 lbs, w/ absolutely no creep. It cost a few bucks to get this stuff done, but well worth it. The Beretta 92's I've never really liked. To me it's just too big a gun for the caliber. It does have a manual safety on it, which is nice, but not imperative for a DA auto. My vote is for the Hi-Power, but I would not get a clone. I'd get the real thing, or go latch onto a SIG (if you've got the bucks), or almost as good, a CZ75B. Dr. Lecter |

years ago, I used to drool over the 92F.. until I held one.. instantly hated it.. there was no balance.. it wasn't intuitive at all.. the build quality was great, but it was, as others have said, just a big gun with nothing special about it
of the two, I'd definitely choose the BHP.. the design and balance is excellent.. and maintenance is very easy due to the simple design I was at the range a few days ago, and a guy showed up right about when I was finishing.. he set up a couple lanes over and started shooting 2" groups at about 10 yards.. which was better than I was doing with my Kimber (granted, it was my first day with my gun) he was shooting a CZ75B, and I have to say I was damn impressed with it

My 92F has been very reliable but I HATE the saftey features. I can not reach the decocker/saftey without shifting the gun to the side in my hand. The safety off is in the up position and since I am used to shooting the 1911's it bothers me much. I traded a Taurus 92 copy for it and should have just kept it. They still have the safety/decocker like the 1911. Why Beretta changed i don't know?
Just my thoughts. My next full size 9mm will ba a SIG229. doberman

Here's my decision. I came across an Israeli BHP, the one's AIM imported a few years ago........no doubt about it. I want the BHP. I can always get another 92.....
I'll be sure to post an update when I pay for it and receive it. The private seller was very generous about giving me terms of payment I can work with and it was only $450! BTW, goto the BHP forum to see a pic of my prize! Heck, take a gander at this....it's a little rough but I'm not complainin' Last edited by Rrotz; 10-08-2003 at 05:07 PM. |

I liked the feel of the HP in my hands until I actually shot it. I tried a friends HP and the trigger pull was pretty heavy. I actually got a blister on my trigger finger from it. The trigger face itself was rather narrow, which contributed to the feel of the trigger pull and the blister. I also got hammer bit pretty good as well. Granted, like a 1911 all these issues can be resolved with a gunsmith or even drop-in parts.
With a Beretta 92FS I had non of those issues. The recoil felt less too as a result of the bigger grip spreading out the force of the recoil over a bigger area. I already had 92FS and recently found a deal in a like new one with factory night sights and 6 factory 10 round mags for $425. Even after paying my FFL another $50 to handle the transfer it was a great deal. My money is on the Beretta. |

Beretta!!!!
I have three Berettas and looking for my fourth. Can't beat them. Safe, accurate, easy to maintain, fun to dolly up -- great gunsmith www.langdontactical.com -- even better price. I'd say go for the Beretta -- it's already a gun that's won your heart and proven itself as a defense firearm.
![]() As for the compacts -- I have two type M -- beautful carry guns and never jammed even once. Highly recommended. Last edited by Mastrogiacomo; 10-08-2003 at 06:00 PM. |

Israeli BHP's are getting too hard to find to pass this up.....I can always get another Beretta.
In fact, I'm going to get a 92 Compact instead of a full size 92FS......well......maybe if I can find another limited edition M9.....I might get that instead. But it's gonna be next year before I can make another pistol purchase. It'll make 3 firearms this year, which is my financial limit....sadly. Gotta pick and choose carefully because I can't sneak anything past the old lady with a little one on the way..... Just got a M97T Trenchgun and Colt Commander 1991 NRM, so I'll have to decide carefully what my 3rd this year will be. Had to sell a half dozen Enfields/Mausers to get her to lighten up on me......hehehe.

I know you like the 13 round compacts but give the type M a try. I have two and really love them. I plan to get more at some point. They're great guns...

What's the deal with the MA compliant handguns? I'm kinda fuzzy on the Beretta 92 designations. Do all the Beretta Compacts accept hi-caps? What's the difference between the: Compact M Compact L Compact FC Compact D - double action only??? I want the external safety/slide stop ect.... |

The Compact type L is a little fatter than the M as it holds more bullets. I prefer the full size but the L is still a fantastic model. The M is something you may have to special order, it's not usually in stock but it can be had upon request. I did that at the Four Seaons gun shop. No one knew what it was except the owner. It holds eight, it's slightly smaller size and both compacts can hold high caps but it'll stick out some with those guns.
The D probably does mean double action only -- I prefer single double action myself. I think the FC means 92FS compact as I've seen it written out that way on some pages when referring to grips, but I could be mistaken.... I don't think you could go wrong with either compact. Depends on which feels more comfortable. You never know -- you may end up with both... As for Mass Compliant -- I'm as lost as you and I blame it on AG Tom Riley. think it's stupid a model of one finish is OK but not the same model in another finish. We recently got the Vertec approved and new Ruguers but I'm still waiting for new Glocks, Elite II, Beretta Cougar and mini-cougar. Believe me, I'm not holding my breath in this state.... Check out www.berettausa.com for pics of the guns. Might help. Last edited by Mastrogiacomo; 10-08-2003 at 07:22 PM. |

Mast, check out www.gunsamerica.com and do a search for 92 compact. This is where I'm gauging 92 Compacts. I'm already getting a Colt Commander (paying it off next week thursday), might as well look seriously into a 92 Compact instead of a BHP.
The BHP I'm interested in is 30 years old, as you can tell by the picture and for the same price I can get a Beretta 92 Compact ($450) with the same 13 round mag capacity and the modern safety features to boot. I might have to sneak the BHP in before Christmas since the seller is going to be generous with payment terms....90 days. Thanks for all the great responses! |

I carried & shot the M9 a lot in the USAF.
I thought it was OK, but I much prefer the 1911 ergonomics. I went looking for the "best for me" 9mm and finally decided on the BHP. I really like it.

Although I like the Beretta to shoot, I will tell you of my experiances with the 92F. I owned a shooting range, and we offered a 92 for rent. We required our ammunition (Factory) to be used through the gun only. Over the course of 3 years, I needed to replace the locking block 5x at $40.00 each time because it kept breaking. After the 5th time, I decided that I had enough and did not repair it. Be Safe Bryan S. Williams Williams Associates Protective Services, LLC www.wa-protective.com
