.45 ACP Double Action Revolvers

Are there any fans of DA .45 ACP revolvers? I have several, a S&W pre 25 model of 1955 5 screw 6 1/2 inch barrel, five 625s in .45 ACP, with three 5 inch, 1 four inch and a 3 inch version. I also have a 5 inch 625 in .45 Colt, but it it doesn't shoot as well as the .45 ACP versions. I have 1911s but I still like these fine wheelguns. What do you all like about them and what do you like to feed them? Any fans of .45 Auto-Rim?

I have a S&W 25-5 I bought on the year they came out and a 625 mountain revolver in .45 acp. I would never sell either of these. My 1911's are my carry guns, these two are my house guns.

Hello. Yes, I like the S&W Model 625 w/5" barrel and use it with both moon clips and the ACPs as well as handloads using the AR cases. This revolver/cartridge is capable of exceptional accuracy in my opinion.

Best.

Yes, I also own a S&W 625. Fine revolver IMO. Very accurate. I got it about 10 years ago, lightly used. I'm planning on getting into reloading soon and using the .45 AR cases.

It seems more than a few well seasoned 1911 and .45 ACP afficianatos end up having .45 ACP double action revolvers. One guy I know does not shoot or reload anything other than .45 ACP so these are his only wheelguns. Makes his life easy when it comes to handloading, one case to deal with. He won't even consider buying .45 Auto-Rim brass or conversion parts because it would mess up his system and he likes the moon clips. For plinking he uses the 1/3 moons that don't need any tools to load and unload them.

Does anyone have experience with the Miculek gun from the S & W performance center? I am very interested in purchasing one, and my dealer knows my weakness , so he asked which barrel length I would prefer and ordered it. He ordered it without a commitment from me to buy...but he knows damn well I'm taking it home...very smart businessman

Me too!

And with a great trigger and action job - those cylinders roll like butter and the pull is smooth and light.

If you want another gun in 45 acp other than the venerable 1911, the 625 is a sweet shooter.

And with the 5" barrle it's well balanced.

The 625 from the S&W PC Mucilek gun is truly awesome. I don't have one yet, but a guy at the range let me shoot his and it was amazing. He had the 5.5 inch barrel. The accuracy was great and the action was as smooth as a 1950s S&W. The smooth wood grips would not be my first choice, but alot of people like them and they can always be changed. You will LOVE this gun if you decide to but it.

I've been a 625 fan for years. My original one was stolen a while back and has been replaced with a newer one. I prefer the 3" barreled ones, but if I ever got a good price on a longer one, it'd be mine :>...

later,
AJ

I have all the barrel S&W 625 lengths made except for the Lew Horton .45 ACP 1 inch snubbie. The 3 incher is my carry gun in the winter, but I like shooting the 5 inch versions the best. My wife sort of borrowed forever my 4 inch barrel version. Oh well, I guess I will have to get a . 45 ACP Mountain Gun to round it out.

I love my 625. I rarely take it out to the range but it's the last of my handguns that I'd ever sell.

I don't have a revolver in45acp yet.....

I have been looking at buying S & W 625. I was thinking about buying a S & W 625 by Camfour. Does anyone have a S & W 625 with 4-inch or 5-inch barrel by Camfour? Or does anyone have any experience with one?

Are they the same ones as S&W PC Mucilek gun?

I would appreciate your input very much!!

I have several .45acp revolvers such as a 1955 target, 1917 S&W and my favorite a 625 Model of 1989. The sweet thing about them is you can use full moon clips which makes for a very speedy reload.

Two 1917 smiths..that are just a blast to shoot..The one was my first real purchase with my own money as a young shooter..The other years later because a like the first so much..Nothing turns head on a range till you pull out both and start blasting with one in each hand...LOL

Lucky I know the range owner and staff and they me..LOL

If there just wan't so much Walter Mitty lurking inside me...

Be safe

Taurus also makes a tracker in 45acp. Total titanium model to be available in the last quarter of this year too.

They are 5 shot revolvers, available in 2, 4, or 6" barrel lenghts, factory ported.

I've seen them at local shops and on the web for around $400.

I guess I might have a little experience with 45acp revolvers. I have owned three 1917s, a 4" S&W 625, and a S&W Springfield Commemorative. I actually prefer the new models as I don't care for the long hammer fall on the 1917s. Regards, Richard

PS I have been after Shooting Star to make 45 Auto-Rim cases for as long as I can remember.

Richard:

I would love to see Starline get off their____ and make some good solid .45 Auto-Rim brass. There is a much larger market for it than some of the obscure calibers they offer. .45 Auto-Rim with the web head modern design can be loaded with heavy bullets in the 250-260 grain range to duplicate and exceed standard .45 Colt velocities. This can be done with less powder and with less felt recoil. When I use .45 ACP in my revolvers, I only use brass that has never been used in an automatic to keep it from getting dents and burrs that might hang it up. I segregate it after firing to ensure it doesn't make it into an automatic either. Do most of you DA .45 ACP revolver owners shoot cast bullets out of your guns?

Virginian?

You said that the .45acp/AR could meet or even exceed the .45 Colt?
I'll borrow from a certain states motto and ask "Show Me".
Please bear in mind that the old BP loads have been clocked at near 1000fps with a 255gn bullet according to Terry Murbach at Corbon. Now that we're not using BP the .45 Colt van easily surpass the stubby .45acp/AR.
I do love the acp round but a man's gotta know it's limitations!

Hey Include me in the 1917 group. I have many long action S&Ws. I like the feel of it. I have 32-20s, 32 S&W, 32 S&W Long, 38 S&W and 38 Special long action S&Ws. You see a pattern?

In an apples to apples comparison, EXCLUDING the hot Ruger loads, yes, I have safely met and exceeded standard factory smokeless loads. I have matched, depending on the powder and bullet, standard .45 Colt velocities in published manuals using 250 and 255 grain bullets using Blue Dot and 2400. These are revolver loads only. The upper limit is about 1200 fps.

Count me in the 45acp revolver group. Love the feel of the 45acp out of a 5 to 6" barrel.

The first one I had was the first 625 (1988 I think). I liked the concept but that particular revolver would start to bind after 1 or 2 cylinder fulls of cast bullet ammo. Since that is what I reload and shoot I got rid of it.

Had a Model 25 cut down to 5", round butted (I prefer that grip) and tuned. Shot it extensively in steel combat matches (speed shooting) for about 2 years. Had it re-timed once in there. Eventually traded it off when I quit shoot those matches.

Now I have a 1989 4" 625. It has been more reliable that the first one and the 4" is legal now in IDPA. Interestingly this one likes .454" bullets. Virtually no leading, or at least none that doesn't come right out with a little brushing and a tight patch.
