Cheaper Than Dirt - Shipping Costs

I almost ordered stuff from CTD until I saw the cost of shipping.

HKS 586-A Speedloaders (2) for $15.66
shipping from warehouse C = $12.83

Ammo Can .50 Caliber (1) for $14.97
shipping from warehouse A = $15.49

Item total = $30.63
Shipping = $31.31

I won't be going back.

I gave up on them when they had their "-51.98% savings" deal.

They've started some screwy deal where they list the warehouse the item ships from in the description. Sometimes items ships from multiple warehouses and they leave it up to the customer to pick the items from the same warehouse to alleviate shipping costs. Sometimes the prices are slightly different from warehouse to warehouse, too.

Seems like a pretty convoluted business practice to me, as well.

They are not cheaper than dirt. I used to surf their site, I gave up when I'm usually able to get stuff from my local gun shop for cheaper, even by the time I add tax

I bought 10K .22's from them and shipping as I recall wasn't that bad. But its one big box from the same place.
However, that's the first time I used them in 10 years because of their predatory shipping prices.

The challenge with CTD is to make sure that you buy things from the same warehouse. Otherwise they very much will get you on shipping costs.

Unfortunately pricing varies from warehouse to warehouse. If I'm not mistaken, each "warehouse" is actually a partner of theirs in a different geographical location. So warehouse A might be a distribution warehouse in Texas, warehouse B might be a retailer in North Carolina, and warehouse C might be a retailer in Oklahoma.

I had the same problem. I was going to buy, I mean who wouldn't with some of the prices they have, but the make up for it in the shipping. It's outrageous. You're better off at your LGS.

I've realized the same thing. Careful ordering though (from the same warehouse) is usually still cheaper than my LGS.

I buy from them. They are reputable and they give you the opputunity to look at the cost of shipping before committing to the purchase. Many other online sellers don't do that for you until after check out. Nevertheless, you have to be a savy online purchaser, for example I never buy an item or place an order under $100 if the shipping charges are going to run something like 10% of the cost of the item, unless its one of those items available nowhere else or unless the shipping charge included in the sales still comes out cheaper then paying for gas and state taxes locally, plus paying for the brick and mortar mark-up at a local store.

I've bought two guns from CTD and I got a good deal. With shipping, FFL transfer fee and whatnot, I still did a good $30 to $50 less than any local deal and I got a specific gun I was looking for and not an inventory gun some store clerk was pushing on me.

If you're going to buy nicnack stuff online, then you need to consolidate all your items into one large order so that the shipping charge is amortized among the items. Frankly, I never make an ammo purchase unless there is a savings involved.

Agreed. I used to use them quite a bit before their shipping prices went astronomical.

If I can get what I want from the same warehouse, fine; if not I am looking elsewhere.

yea pretty much done with them. i get the catalog every month. on day one i go to get 2 or 3 ammo and their always sold out. how can they always be sold out on the 1st day i get the catalog? there ammo cans are priced high as well then you add shipping and you get crushed. 14 a can, 12 a can. then shipping you end up pay 16 a can. went to a gun show and i got 5 ammo cans for 40 bucks.

I got a LOT of ammo from them in the past and was quite happy with prices. Now...not so much.

I was going to buy 2k rounds of .22LR (stuff I can't find locally) from them recently and the shipping was over $30. I passed.

I chose never to buy anything from Cheaper than Dirt when they chose to screw over their customers by shamelessly jacking up their prices during the last election cycle.

I will say this about Cheaper Than Dirt. When the ammo shortage was going full bore CTD offered ammo at prices that were unbelievable.

Ripping off your customers is bad business.

For many businesses the shipping department has become a profit center and not a service to the customer. You have to look at the total cost of getting it home before you decide where to buy.

Had the same experience recently.
Two different warehouses, shipping costs exceeded cost of items.
Haven't ordered from them in years, will not in the future either.

A point driven home by the fact that I routinely have 2K bullets - that's 65 lbs. by the way - delivered from halfway across the country for $15.

Total transit time is typically three days.

CTD isn't the only place with high shipping costs, either.
