Person Preference - NEW Kimber >$1000
As the Thread title reads - What do you feel is the best kimber 1911 for under $1000? I am interested in spending about $1000 on my first 1911 - im 90% sure I want it to be a kimber as I already love the feel of the gun (a friend owns one TLE RL - and have been to a few shops in the dallas area to look at a few guns).
Here are my requirements: Need something to learn with Need an accurate gun to take my CCP And plan to use this as my primary CCW. Any help, thoughts, input is appreciated in advance! JTK |

The TLE in either fullsize or the Pro size. Comes with 30lpi front serrations and night sights if you want those.
For something much cheaper yet high quality, the basic Kimber Custom II. Its also available in fullsize or Pro and in black or stainless. Good choice on the Kimber brand! |

The Custom TLE II probably represents one of the best values <$1000 ($854).
For CCW, I might recommend a Pro Crimson Carry II or Ultra Crimson Carry II with the laser grips for about ($905), but it might run over if you can't live without night sights. Although it's more of a target pistol, the Gold Match II is the most accurate and reliable pistol I own <$1000 ($942). I have also run it as my CCW on occassion. For just slightly over $1000 ($1004), the Eclipse Custom II in 10mm with full-house 10mm loads is probably the best IMO. I feel confident that 10mm will do the job in just about any situation.

Kimber Custom TLE II
My choice is Kimber Custom TLE II (I paid $906 + tax and other applicable fees in California). I really like this design and I like my guns to be black (or blued). Also, I like that this model includes two features I really wanted out of the box: night sights and 30 lpi front checkering. I actually love those rubber-ish stock grips too! Here it is:

Why are gun prices so much more in texas?? -
Ultra Crimson Carry II with the laser grips - $1176 + tax Kimber Custom TLE II - $1054 + tax I've been to a few shops in the North Dallas area and prices are so close within $5 the shop owners are in cahoots I really wanted the "PRO TLE II" but the price is $1122 + tax (8.25%) - I can buy 2 Springfields for that

The Pro Carry II would be my choice. In the matte black they can be had for $750-825 range. great gun. Uses standard government magazines. You could get a Custom II in the same price range in matte black. I own copies of both and I shoot the Pro sized gun much better. I'd find a range that has Kimber's in their range box and go shoot a few.

Pro Carry 2, more comfortable for carry given its weight, just my opinion.

I think the prices you may be looking at, are full retail. The pricing I've seen in anywhere from 21%-27% off MSRP.

By the way... just want to chime in on the pricing... I purchased my Kimber Custom TLE II on the Internet out of Wisconsin... hence the $906 price tag. I have the same model in my local gun shop (San Diego, CA) for $1,059 (no discount).

I generally ask gun dealers if they're a Kimber Master Dealer. I also generally go to places that will let you see their Master Dealer Pricing list (I think it's supposed to be confidential).
You may also want to find a non-profit Shooting Club in your area/region that sells weapons at lower than retail prices. I find that I get good Return on Investment on the cost of membership when I buy at least 3 or more guns per year.

Anything in a commander size for carrying and for your first 1911 would probably be your best bet. I would stay away from the 3" 1911s for now. But as for right now I would say Kimber is a very solid opening 1911. You'll be happy with it and then get the itch and then want to buy some more lol

Welcome to the Forum!
Here's another vote for the Custom TLE II which was my first full size 1911. I learned on it, made my mistakes on it and it is now my overall favorite 1911. It was flawless out of the box and remains 100% reliable after 7000 rounds and it's in my carry rotation. As someone else already mentioned, the TLE is one of Kimber's best values. |
