Check-Mate Magazines

I finally had a chance to shoot my new Guardian yesterday. Sweet shooting weapon but had two FTF'S on the last round using the same magazine for 75 rounds.

Weapon was clean and oiled with provided oil before starting and cleaned and oiled again with provided oil after the first 16 rounds.

I was shooting 230 FMJ Blazer Brass.

The 1st FTF was a typical half feed into the chamber. The 2nd was standing straight up on the follower.

Thoughts?

Stronger mag springs or just buy Wilson mags and be done with it?

Thanks in advance...

I've had good luck with Checkmate mags but it won't hurt to try the Wilsons.

I had the same problems with Blazer Brass in a different caliber and pistol. I think I would try cleaning it again and shooting it some more before investing in any other mags. I use $9.00 mags in my Pointman with no problems at all using Federal Champion cheap ammo from WalMart. YMMV

I'm with Jim. I must be blessed as I don't have issues with them and actually prefer them and Colt's.

FTF on the last round in a mag always makes me think of this.

Wow, very timely. I shot my Baer TRS last evening and had the same problem. (see my post in baer section). Basicly had four Checkmate flush 8 rounders, loaded with 7 rounds each. Had already put 150 rounds thru the gun without a hiccup. Granted the gun was dirty. I found 7 more rounds and fired them in a Checkmate true 8 rounder and they all fed well. I'm thinking, dirty gun and the followers.

CheckMate magazines are as good as any and better than most in my opinion.

The mag was not oiled or oily.

Thank you for the links. I had read about the springs before I had even shot my Guardian that is why I asked.

Thanks again.

I think CM mags are alright, but my Wilson Elites are much better. The two that came from DW with my PM7-45 were very hard to load to full capacity, so I just put them back in their box and use my Wilsons instead.

I'm one of the unfortunate ones that have never had good luck with DW supplied mags used in DW's. They work with no problems in any other 1911 I have but for some reason they don't work well in my DW's. I think I'm cursed now so I always buy new CMC or Wilson mags for my DW's. They always work with those mags so I don't even chance it anymore.

Try some CMC's sometimes they are on sale on Midway for only $18!

'this' as mentioned in Post # 5

Has been flagged and placed in a Favorites Folder.

That photo raises question marks in the remainder of my brain cells about the advisability of using +P ammunition in a flush fit 8 round magazine. Especially in the short slide .45s.

Thanks to log, the gent who captured the image, and whoever posted the original. Good stuff. Thanks all.

Get a stronger spring for your magazines and problem solved.

Quite a few people have had issues with the CM mags issued with DW pistols. Then again, many have not so, it seems to be the luck of the draw. They either work or they don't with a particular pistol. After quite a few complaints, DW has not made any changes. In any case, almost everyone has had pretty good success with the Wilson mags and DW pistols. I would go with the Wilson mags for carry.

It is quite obvious to me that the springs in my Chip McCormick & Ed Brown magazines are much stronger that the spring in my Checkmate (Dan Wesson) mags.

I ordered 5% increase mags from Wolff today. One 3-pack for the CM mags and one 3-pack for my old GI mags. She said they are behind about a week in shipping.

You can probably get the springs from CheckMate faster, in fact if the DW magazines do not ship with CM followers (with a dimple) you might want to order the spring and follower package.

Blazer brass is pretty notorious for a weak crimp so my advice would be to try another brand of ammunition as well.

Let us know how it works out.

My last post wasn't clear. I ordered the springs only, not the whole mag. As for the ammo, you are correct on the weak crimp for sure. Just releasing the slide to load a round in the chamber will move the bullet back into the case if you do it three or four times with the same bullet.

No that was clear, CheckMate sells the Hi Performance spring as well as a package with their dimpled follower, many companies use the flat follower.
