What is a fair price to pay for a used RIA 1911 45 tactical?

Hello,

I have been wanting to purchase an RIA 1911 tactical 45, and the prices are all over the board in my area.

What is a reasonable price to buy a used RIA 1911 tactical 45 in excellent condition with 2 mags and case?

I am in the Cincinnati Ohio area if that is a factor.

Thanks in advance

Does it matter if its purchased Used from a Gun Shop?

I dunno, somewhere around $300 is what I'd offer for a used RIA Tactical. Some will think that's too high, others will think it's too low. As the buyer, YOU decide what the item is worth to you and the seller either does business with you, or not.

Learn to do a fast, stone-cold, thorough function check on a 1911. Run through it after asking permission from the owner. Ask politely to do things like letting the slide slam home on an empty chamber and pulling the trigger. Skip those things if he does not give you permission to do them. Be a gentleman but a small frown on being denied those actions might be appropriate. He is trying to sell the pistol, he should understand you are doing your due diligence to make sure you are buying a sound item.

Give it an external once over with reading glasses on (well that's what I do cuz I need 'em). Don't act shocked by scratches and wear.

Say nothing during the checks. Say nothing after the checks, until you have a number in mind. If the pistol passes the checks and you intend to make an offer, give the owner your best 1,000-yard stare and state what you are willing to pay.

If he doesn't want to do business with you or if you don't like the pistol, it should become clear quickly, in which case you just walk away. Wish the fellow a good day and good luck.

The only one I have found is in a local Gun Shop. They are asking 420.00. Its a nice piece but I dont want to over pay or waste the stores time.

Welcome to the forum mrdmevans,It depends how bad you want it, like everything else. is it a 5''pistol or a 3 1/2'' pistol.

This is the 5'' TAC pistol from Centerfire Systems,

http://centerfiresystems.com/AC-RI1911TACA.aspx
Right now is a good time to buy, because they are offering free shipping at the present time thats about $15.00 or $20.00 savings plus there is no tax, about $30.00 savings. so you have a new pistol Delv. to your FFL for $420.00 + his fee, about $25.00 here. so for $450.. you have a new pistol. how much does the owner want for it ? a new ACT Mag. is under $20.00.do you know the owner? can you shoot it? you don't want to buy a used pistol that someone
has messed up the feed ramp on,it would void the warranty. RIA pistols have a lifetime warranty, on matter who owns it. a fair price IMO $325.00 to $ 350.00.let us know what you do, hope this helps you......

It's the 5". Its at one of the local gunshops in the area. I have never purchased there before.

I've checked 3 different stores in my area and this is the only one that has a used RIA. The other stores are selling the tactical new for between 479-520.

I think I'd be willing to pay 400 out the door for the used one, but didnt know if that would be an insult to the gun shop or not.

For the prices being so close between a new and a used one, if I wanted one I would just pay a little extra and get the brand new one. That way you know its yours and only your hands have caressed or abused it. Good luck.

Ya, I dont think they will go down that low but.... It cant hurt to ask.

If they dont I may just try talking another gun shop down on the new one.

I am anxious to get it, especially after looking at the pictures everyone posted in another link on the forum. First change will have to be the grips!

There is a gun show in Cincinnati this weekend. http://www.gunshow.net/sharonville-new.htmThis is the same show that was in Dayton this past weekend where I attended and its usually very similar. Several dealers had the 5" RIA in the $400 Range I saw one dealer had them at $395 with the tactical running slightly higher, I would expect the same this weekend. Go Sunday afternoon late after the crowd and make a couple of offers and you will go home with a Rock and a new one at that.

$350 is a fair price. I'd break it down in the shop and look for wear/damage on the barrel, barrel bushing, etc if will give you a good indication on how it lived. Every trade in gun I've looked at recently has been dirty and looked like it was run through the ringer. But honestly $350, I'd spend the extra money and buy one new if it were my money.

I priced mine for a friend @ $300 & I think it is fair. A FTF sale to a stranger: $350. If I was looking for one used I think $350 would be my max. But keep in mind, a GS is going to add tax and some even a FFl fee. If you buy from an individual you have non of that nonsense.

I purchased one in a local trader mag for $275. Came with a plastic case, 2 mags and 75 rounds of 230 gr hb. I saw it advertised in their a month before and it hadn't sold. I offered $275 a month later and he took it. Great way to get good deals on guns. I keep the weekly trader mags for 3 to 4 months and I'll call about them a month or 2 later. If they havent sold they are usually ready to deal. I've got some very nice pistols, rifles, shotguns, vintage music equipment at very competitive prices.
