Colt Custom Shop - worth it?

Those that have sent their 1911s to Colt's Custom Shop, was the price worth it? Was the wait worth it? Would it be better/comparable to let Wilson or Ed Brown do the work?

I've got a Series 70 that I want some work done on but don't know who to let work on it.

A previous owner had some work done that needs to go. A gunsmith will have to do a portion of the fixing up so I thought I'd get a reliability package, Novak sights and a dehorn job done at the same time.

Does anyone have a current options price list from Colt; their website is not very user-friendly.

The 2009 Catalog shows a slight price increase to $375.

Hello,

Just call them at 1-800-962-2658, and request a Colt Custom Shop 2009 price list.

I own two series 70 customized by the Colt Custom Shop, one with the O custom Shop package the other slightly customized both a pieces of art, the price and wait (the turnaround is about eight weeks) does really worth.

Regards,

Javi

Reasonable all the way around. Catalog's in the mail. Thanks, guys!

PS: Anyone know how their work compares to, say, Wilson or Brown?

Are you trying to restore it to original or just make it work right? If you don't know someone close that has a good reputation then I always prefer sending anything I own back to the OEM, especially if you are trying to restore it. My limited experience has been that the value of the gun is better protected if sent back to the OEM and you keep the receipt(s).

Colt should consider putting the options and prices of the custom shop on the WEBSITE.

Yeah, that would be nice...

Sig has their custom shop price list for PDF download on their site... You wouldn't think it would be too difficult.

There's an article in the current "Book of the 1911" on the custom shop. They employ 3 full-time engravers. Their work is simply awesome. I've had several guns worked on in the custom shop (displayed here), and the price and turn-around time can't be beat. Plus, it's done by COLT.

Good news. I have a .38 Super I'd like to dress up a bit later this year. I'll ask for a catalog/price list in the meantime.

Just a suggestion, something to think about!
I have a new series 70 blued. Highly customized, I think the only Colt left on it is the slide and frame. Everything else is Ed Brown Hardcore.
Sights by Novak.
Rear sight Novak X series with tritium bar. SHARP!!!
Front Sigth Novak Gold Bead convex sight. EXTREMELY SHARP!!!

If you're not totally sold on tritium for your sights, try the "Old School" as the boys at POST call me, Gold Bead front sight. WOW!!! I'll never go back.

Novak makes a hell of a product, as I'm sure Colt does an outstanding job. I happen to have a good friend/smith (builds for Tactical Solutions) who's built the gun for me.
As soon as it's back next week from being finished I'll post some pics.
BTW... 8 weeks not bad at all.
I've been in a holding pattern since February. But he's worth the wait!

Yes - the price sheet that came with my catalog includes engraving options and pricing. Not cheap - but looks worth every cent spent on it.

Rather than start a new thread asking this, would any of you folks who have had the Colt Custom shop do some work on your Colts be willing to post pics? I've seen some "Model O package" upgrade pics floating around, but maybe this would be a good thread to collect them, as well as other work done by Colt.
