Hi, I am brand new to the 1911 scene and just purchased my first about 2 weeks ago, a RIA 1911 tatical.
currently the gun has a full length guide rod and reverse recoil spring plug, I was looking to switch it over to a short guide rod and a regular spring plug.
My questions are....
Will this hurt or help performance in any way?
Is this simply just a parts swap or is more required?
Should i swap the recoil spring as well?
should just about any guide rod, plug, spring work?
The back of that area appears to be an impact area at the front edge of the guide where the spring stops (Don't know what to call that larger area) and I see that it's the area that hits the elastomeric buffers folks put in 1911's.
It is the impact edge of the slide dust cover/ spring channel that contacts the face of the guide rod head. However notice that the transition between the spring channel and slide where it has like two blocks is where the impact is concentrated. Yes, we need a graph with every surface named.:biglaugh:
I like the full length guide rods better since they don't loosen up when I shoot. They're easier to pull apart as well. Just use a little metal piece instead of a tool.
I'm not sure some here understand just how simple Log's method is and the Dawson...even a tad easier. You simply pull the slide back, insert the wire, slowly move the slide forward. The spring is now compressed over the guide rod and the slide is free of tension. Move the slide to the take down notch position and remove the slide stop under zero tension. Remove the slide and pull the guide rod/compressed recoil spring unit by pulling it out from the rear.
If the operation takes more than 10 seconds, you don't get the procedure! Now the bushing can be removed by hand under no tension with the barrel.
Reassembly is the reverse and allows you to put the slide stop in with both hands under no recoil spring tension. Pull the slide back, remove the wire and slide the slide back into battery...DONE.
If you read Harrison's post..this is what he does as well.
And is where I probably picked up on this method I've posted pictures of, and is such a simple answer and makes it so easy for tired fingers.:biglaugh:
Ok Ok I am now really confused. I just picked up my 1st full size 1911. A Sig Blackwater 1911- It has the short stubby GI guide rod. On the SIG BW - can I switch out to a FLGR? What type and will it affect the functioning of the gun? Do I use the same spring?
As long as the new parts and youre not installing some strange and crazy setup the impact will be minimal.
You'll have a little more weight up front which should slightly reduce your recoil and muzzle climb but don't expect a massive difference. And obviously you mau have to field strip your gun a little differently.
The difference is considered by most to be insignificant and a matter of personal preference. If you choose to install a recoil reducing guide rod that's an entirely different story.
No you can still scratch the frame with the slide stop. Of course you can use Log's modification to the slide stop to prevent scratching.
