Disconnect and sear trouble

When I was young my father gave me a Remington Rand slide that was untouched by human hands. I went and got a Springfield NM frame and put it together. I used this pistol for the last 25 years with out a failure. This week I fitted it with a Wilson beavertail and a new hammer. All the parts fit, but now the disconnector hangs up on the bottom of the sear. If I pull the hammer back with my thumb the hammer will fall when the trigger is pressed. If I rack the slide the hammer will not fall unless I push the hammer down with my thumb. My question is, do I remove material from the bottom of the sear or the top of the disconnect where it meets the bottom of the sear, or a little of both?

Try this, take the Disconnector and sear out, polish the mating sides of the Disconnector and the sear. Don't touch anything else, especially the nose. You may have a burr on one or the other. Reassemble it all,paying close attention to properly installing the Searspring.

Try it again.

Hey Dave, it didn't work. I'm going to try a new disconnect/sear combo to see if that changes anything.

I would put money on the new trigger not having enough pre-travel. It is not uncommon to get a trigger with a trigger bow that is too long for the frame.

What brand trigger did you install.

Good point Allen, I was thinking aout that but, tried the other possibility first.

Same trigger, it has about1/8" pre-travel can't remember the brand it's been in there so long.

Remove the grip safety so that you can see the disconnector while you rack the slide.

That's what I've been doing. When you move the slide to the rear, it depresses the disconect like its supposed to. When you move the slide forward the disconect comes up but not fully. If you push the hammer down it releases the disconect, and it returns to its normal position.

Check to make sure that the hammer strut is not hitting the center leaf of the sear spring. Also check how much the slide is overcocking the hammer. If the hammer is rotated too far the strut can go to, or over center and you must push the hammer down a little to get the hooks to the sear.

At your request I removed the strut completely there was no change. The hammer rides against the bottom of the slide and doesn't show ant signs of over cocking, but like I said the strut is removed from the hammer.

Problem solved. Its the hammer causing the problems.
