I like the Wilson magazines & they have served me for 20+ years reliably..
I have thrown junk magazines on the hill at the range & shot the hell out of them to put them out of my misery & anyone else that might think they could be saved..
Tried shooting star magazine followers & springs in colt mags & ended up shooting them to bits too..
In my previous post, I said Tripp 8 and 10 rounders work the best. After I replaced the springs in my Wilson 47D, things have been good, except it is hard to seat the loaded magazine fully into the gun. Tripp 8 rounders don't have that problem.
I sent my gun in to Springfield Armory custom shop for reliability work. My gun still doesn't play nice with the Tripp 10 rounders. It has high angle malfunction on the 2nd round after the first round is fired. SACS told me that their reliability work is based on the use of their OEM 7 round magazine. Well, I don't know what to say to that since 8 and 10 round magazines are pretty popular now days.

Probably that the professionals at the Springfield Custom Shop believe 7 rounders are the most reliable. Other's may disagree, but that seems to be what they think.
Now I have 3 Tripp Cobra 10 rounders sitting there. I don't want to use them for HD since they are not that reliable. Maybe I should buy one Wilson 10 rounder and try it out.
Tripp also offers a full size 7 rounder if you prefer Tripp mags.
I prefer 7 rounders, but I'll use 8 rounders. I know there are folks that like them, but I consider 10 round 1911 mags a novelty item. If you want a ten shot gun in .45 Auto, I think there are a lot better choices than a single stack 1911.
I understand your points. I am perfectly fine with my Tripp 8 rounders.
Since I live in the ban state, 10 round is the most I can use. And with my small hand, I shoot single stack 1911 better than anything else. My choice is limited.
I just ordered 1 Wilson 10 rounder. I will test it out and see how it work.
Will CMC Powermags seat on a closed slide? Are they easier than 47d's? I'm considering Powermags or ETM's to replace my 47d's as they are too hard to seat with the slide closed.
I've been using SA 7 round mags and CMC 10 round power mags. I shoot the CMC mags for the most part. I added Fusion base ads on the SA for concealed carry but I can carry the 10 rounds just as easily.
In my SA Loaded I haven't had a feed issue with either brand of mag. I was gifted a mag once and I didn't like the function and while it worked I wasn't comfortable keeping it I really like the CMC mags the best. I shoot FMJs, JHPs, and the Hybrids. I will note that I polished the feed ramp and the chamber to a mirror finish and I always inspect my feed ramps in every semiautomatic I own. I believe the angle and fit of the ramp is critical for reliability. I like how Colt uses two angles to increase reliability. I think my next will be a Colt Defender, and a SA Pro Operator after that. Next Christmas hopefully, I didn't do well enough this year.
The only failures that I have had in my Les Baer Super Tac have been one failure to lock back and one lock back with one remaining round in the clip when that one round moved forward 1/4 inch. Both were with Tripp 7 rounders. No issues with the Bear clips that came with the gun or with Chip M's.
Just ran two hundred rounds through the Tripps again with no issues. They were pretty new when the above issues happened, and both may have been with the same mag. I left them loaded for a week before trying again, and that may have settled things. still don't trust them to carry, but will run another 500 rounds through them. If that goes without incident, I will feel better about them.
Shortly after my last post, I went to a training class with 8-round 47Ds (w/ new springs). I would still get high angle malfunction on the 2nd round. Good thing is that I got the chance to fix the malfunctions.
I got my 10-round 47D couple weeks ago and took it out shooting. It was a 50/50 chance getting high angle malfunction. Luckily, I only bought one this time.
Chip McCormick 7 and 8 round mags have worked well in my RIA officer. I pick them up on sale from CDNN Sports here in Texas. I also pick up boots for the mags for cheap money.
Never bought an 8 rd mag. My factory guns are all SA and the supplied 7rd mags have been perfectly reliable.
If I'm shooting my builds, or even the factory guns at the range, I use the Chip McCormick 10rd power mag or 10rd power mag +, they've run flawlessly in all of my guns fortunately. Based on that I'd say the CMC 8rds are worth a try.
Brand/reputation aside, in the end you really need to test what works in YOUR gun.
Most of my 8x.45 magazines are Power Mags. I have Shooting Star, Metalform, and Wilson 47D but those are relegated to the reload because I don't feel I can count on them to slide stop.
I await the CMC RPM in 8 shot, I don't know why they introduced it in extended 10 shot.
Just ordered a bunch of WILSON 10rounders for my .45s. Took a class over the weekend and the instructor said use his 10's they worked great. Put about 150rds through them with no issues in his BCM 1911.
I was looking for pics to see how mush the Tripp Research mags stick out. So I bought one, don't think it will work for carry but great range mag. See pics.
This is the Wilson combat low profile base
Thought this might be useful, know it would have helped me.
The difference between the Tripp (and the WIlson ETM mags, which are built the same way) and things like the 47d's and others is that the 47d's/Kimpro Tac Mags/any flush-fit 8-round mag use different springs and a follower to fit 8 rounds into a 7-round tube.
The ETMs, Tripps, and others that stick out further by contrast use a slightly longer mag tube so that they don't have to use a shorter follower and different spring.
Does it make a difference? I think you'll hear opinions either way, but personally I want 8-round mags, and mag bodies designed for 8 rounds, just in case.
