First Cleaning of Friend's TRP - seriously??

Helped my buddy with his frist cleaning. I'm sorry but that the whole "paper clip in the hole" thing, while marring up the front muzzle area is entirely too lame. That's a deal breaker for me.

Considering this is the SA area, I'm sure I'll get killed but dear God! Really couldn't engineer a better way??

This gets a lot of favorable reports. For $70, it should.

My personal favorite fix is to replace the bull barrel with a conventional barrel, and add a barrel bushing, g.i, guide rod and plug. The TRP Operator slide is milled to accept a conventional bushing

If you cant strip it without marring up the muzzle area, you're doing it wrong.

Yes, I did notice the undercut grooves in the muzzle. I'll forward that product along. Thanks!

Sure, their may be a technique you've developed but regardless, sneaking a bent pin (i.e. paperclip) into a small bore to pull out the component is asking for trouble. Besides, why?? I think that feature needs to be corrected - and easily done so.

Sorry, as a 26 year mechanisms engineer in the aerospace industry, these things bug me

Just saw the video - excellent! Seems there's a solution for SA without having to pay for the engineering!

Seems like a GI guide rod would do the same job cheaper than the Dawson.

Conversion to a bushing/plug set up: new barrel $250, new bushing $50,
spring plug and guide rod $25, gunsmith fitting $100ish, Total $400+ , versus $70 for the Dawson.

I bought a two peice full length guide rod from SA that supposedly drops right in (haven't done it yet). It was only $17, on sale now at the SA website. I have another bull barrel 1911 with a similar set up. It does require an allen wrench for takedown though.

Replacing the whole mechanism is seriously ridiculous. The gun should have come with a tool for take down that fits nicely through the slide. I have an ultra carry and it uses the same kind of setup. Its not really challenging to take it down correctly. I see more marks from the slide stop than marks from the recoil spring setups like this.

Just take a few extra seconds to do it right and all will be well in the universe.

I'm sure I'm stupid, but couldn't you remove the recoil assembly after taking the slide off? It may be different with a bull barrel, but with a standard barrel with bushing, you can pull the slide stop out first and take the slide off the front of the frame while keeping your thumb on the recoil spring as you go.

Sorry for the crummy cell phone pic, but I hope you get the idea.

It can be done with the bull barrel too.

As far as I am concerned, if you can't strip it without a tool if is manufactured wrong.

I have 2 STI Trojan's with a FLGR's and I can strip them with or without the paperclip without issue.

Mine came with two little plastic pieces you use to put in the hole to disassemble it. No paper clip needed.

I sent mine to the Custom Shop and now I have a national match barrel, bushing, and a GI guide rod.
