springfield 1911 vs. Ruger P90

I do not intend to conceal carry. I'm 6'3" 235# and have pretty big hands, in fact i really wanted a Colt 686 357. mag but i couldn't find one with a grip that my pinky finger would actually be on the handle. I read somone's sig is it a problem to be left handed?

My budget is right in the $500 ballpark, the Ruger being about $50 under and the GI being about $50 over. not that big a deal when you realize how much ammo is

You can't go wrong with either one of those fine firearms. You mentioned that you have large hands. Have you ever held a doublestack 1911. I don't have huge hands, but large. And the doublestack fits like a glove. And the extra capacity never hurts either.

All I can say is MAN those p90's are ugly! Sorry if you feel differently Im just stating my opinion. Personally I would suggest making your decision between a 1911 and a glock. I have a kimber 1911 and a glock 26(they make a glock in 45acp). 1911's are classics, I read somewhere that holding a 1911 is like shaking hands with an old friend. I find this to be true, when you hold a 1911 it just feels right. Also glocks run forever, Ive got around 7,000 rounds through my glock and the only problem I've ever had was several failure to feed during one range session using surplus ammo and I realized the rounds that wouldnt feed had casings that were out of spec.

The P90 series make up for its looks; being dead nutz reliable. Some will argue even more than the 1911

Correct, i have talked personally to people personally and through the web that have owned SA 1911's and never had a jam in 28 years, and 10 years with a p90. There are definately strengths for each gun that as i keep comparing keep offsetting the other. So shooting both is really the only way. Even if they are both equal in my hand it will still be tough. thanks for all the input guys, i'll update you after i squeeze off a few rounds with each. Thanks for the suggestion, i may rent a glock 21 while i'm there as well.

You'll notice that the original P series Rugers utilized the 1911's swinging link, long after virtually every other manufacturer abondoned it. The ergonomics and horrible trigger of the P90 will be the biggest detractors.

The P90 is the only gun I ever regretted selling. It was my first 45 and ate everything it was fed and never failed. The trigger on mine was pretty good, not as good as my 1911s but very acceptable. It worked when it was so dirty I was ashamed to use it, I do a lot better at cleaning my guns now a days. I never, every had a problem with it.

With that being said I'm a 1911 geek now but one of these days when I find a good used P90 I'll own one again. If anyone laughs about it I'll ask them if they would like to stand down range in front of it while I run thru a mag full of ammo!!! It makes a great home defense gun.

Of the two, buy the Springer. I would encourage you to save up an additional $250 or $300 and buy a Colt Series 70. Colts have a one-piece barrel, not 2-piece, and are generally match quality. They also have a bunch fewer MIM parts (only 3, IIRC). Should you buy the Springer, you will wind up throwing away and buying $300 worth of parts should you ever decide to upgrade the pistol. Another consideration is that the 1911 is easier to hide should you decide to get a CHL, and the Marvel .22lr conversion unit is a wonderful low-cost training accessory that lets you practice with your carry gun.


IMHO, the only thing a new Colt S70 re-issue needs is to have the front strap undercut behind the trigger guard, a true high-ride grip safety installed, the magazine well beveled, and the whole pistola de-horned; something Colt's Custom Shop will do for a paltry $375.00. They will also throw in a set of Novak's nicely dovetailed into the slide for that price. Something to think about while you enjoy shooting your nice Colt.
