New SR1911 owner!

Hello all. I am new to the forum and started reading here as I was considering purchasing a 1911. I was pretty much set on a Remington R1 and then saw a post about the Ruger. After looking, I felt it had the options and looks I wanted. I couldn't find one locally so I went to gunbroker com and bid $700 for one and won it. In less than a week it had arrived at my local FFL where they were very helpful with getting me setup.

I got it home and took it apart to clean and inspect it. Just gauging feeling it compared to an R1, it felt looser. It rattled a little but everything looked nice. The trigger has some free play/rattle, but nothing that I really worried about. My FFL mentioned the same thing. He said it seemed very nice other than the play in the trigger. After feeling like I put it back together properly(hey...this is my first 1911), I then went looking for some ammo as I found out that the range by my house was going to be open the next morning.

I took it to the range and shot 150 rounds through it. 50 were Remington (I assume the standard stuff everyone uses...230g fmj) and 100 rounds of some Winchester of same spec that was slightly cheaper. First 147 went through fine. #148 didn't go off. I can't remember exactly what happened, but I easily ejected the round, inspected, ran it back through and it went off OK. Gun worked very smoothly otherwise. Trigger felt nice. It seemed to shoot a little low for me, but hey...I am a newbie here so it is probably me having to get used to the dots. I can say that I took my time on one shot later in the session and was able to nail dead center, so it is matter of concentration. The last 30 rounds were low and to the left for me. I guess I was getting tired.

This was my first time at this range and I couldn't tell exactly how far my target was. Another range where I have shot had lights for three distances. I would assume this was around 25 ft. I attached a pic of the target I used for the first few mags. You can see I compensated a little as I started shooting low. I'll have to see how I do at the regular range where I have had some practice with other pistols as I want to have a fair comparison. I wasted the other targets I had where you really can't get a picture of what was going on. I should have bought more targets.

I cannot believe how fast I went through 150 rounds!

Welcome to the SR1911 world. Pretty good shooting if you ask me. If you really do get hand fatigue try shooting with your off hand. I know it sounds strange but your off hand doesn't develop that little muscle memory of flinching while squeezing the trigger. Just try it. You'll also find you can shoot cheaper ammo in this gun. I try to stay with brass or nickle casings but PMC, Aguilla, Federal (WalMart), or RWS work just fine since I don't reload. Enjoy!
