NOT including the rear sight, compacts/Officer's are approximately 4-7/8" from the front of the frame/magwell to the top of the slide. A fullsize/Commander is about 5-1/4" tall.
If you have a fullsize 1911, you can measure down about 3-3/4" from the bottom of the slide (just above the grip panel area) and put some tape or a rubberband at this point, and then do the same on the slide--measuring about 6" from the rear of the slide. This will help you visualize the dimensions of the compact Colts.
