STI Edge FTF

My brother has been shooting an STI Edge 40 and has had some feed issues. If a round makes it all the way in, it fires and ejects just fine. The problem is that 1 in 50 get jammed during he feed cycle. He has this issue with all of his mags and has tried several different lengths of ammo and several different charges of powder to no avail.

I have a feeling it is the extractor being set too tight. I had a similar issue with my Kimber 1911 45 and a Wilson extractor set to 24oz did the trick.

I have a set of extractor gages but I don't know what to set it to for the STI. Any help would be appreciated. I didn't want to make any assumptions that 24oz would do the trick for him so I thought I'd ask here.

get an aftec extractor for it. Most use them for competition guns. I have thousands of rds thru mine with no problems

Any extractor can be used, you set it to hold the shell but not too tightly, it is not really an exact setting. Aftec is great, harder to set up and costly. It may really just need a little stoning or rounding of a corner, too.

The Aftec looks pretty good but it is a little pricey considering I am not 100% sure that will do the trick. I would really like to try a Wilson bulletproof like the one I have in my 45.

Does anyone know if the 9mm/38 will work for the 40cal 2011? Wilson doesn't list a 40 cal extractor option on their site. I know I need a series 70.

The Wilson 9/38 extractor should work well. That's what I used on my 40. It will require tuning, so you might as well try tuning the extractor that you have. STI extractors are good ones. I have never had problems getting them tuned to run.

I assume you're shooting reloads and not factory ammo.
Have you chamber checked the rounds using the barrel?
Is your OAL 1.200 or longer?
Does a loaded round slide easily under extractor?
Is the recoil spring stock?

Aftec's require fitting and sometimes a new firing pin stop as well. Replacing the extractor would be after all other remedies failed. Throwing parts at a problem can get expensive. Eliminate the easy stuff first then if it still doesn't run take to a competent smith.

Yes we are shooting reloads.
We have tried 1.125 and 1.150 for lengths. We have not tried anything as long as 1.200.
All rounds have been getting chamber checked since we started having issues.
The rounds do slide nicely under the extractor. The extractor looks good and checks out around 24oz.
We have tried the factory recoil spring and a replacement Wolf spring that they sent my brother.

Good call about fixing a problem with parts. That can get expensive. I think we can get to the bottom of this somehow. I appreciate all the support from you guys here. Rather than putting more money into parts we may be better off at some point to give that money to a qualified gunsmith.

I'll keep thi thread up do date if we find anything that starts working.

Thanks. I'll keep that in mind for sure.

Watch this video. I might be a recoil spring issue and this might help you a little.

Agreed, mine runs factory ammo flawless as well.... But that doesn't seem to be the case for most.

I agree and DO also run my STI .40 w/ an OAL of 1.185 w/ 180gr. bullets, but..
My Edge (Have and use a 5.0 Eagle bushing gun now..) ran absolutely flawlessly w/ box stock 180's from PMC
(OAL 1.135-ish) at local matches after just a quick check and tune of the factory extractor tension and a mirror polish on the feed ramp..

That's pretty short. I load 1.135" for my regular .40s normally, and 1.190-1.200" for my .40 1911s.

If I had to guess, he's getting a 3-point jam, with the flat side of the bullet cone smack against the roof of the chamber?

I think that is what is happening. When it happens and the clock is running, we don't exactly stop to take pictures. When I watch him he has to pull the slide back and tip the gun over to clear the jammed round.

I'll suggest to him to load som at 1.190 and take a camera to the range.
