45 ACP vs 9mm
http://www.thestate.com/2012/07/11/2...#storylink=cpy
"The new 9 mm pistols (FN) will replace .45-caliber Sig Sauer firearms ..." "...the 9 mm holds more bullets than the old weapons, so officers will not be outgunned by criminals." Would you rather carry an eight shot .45ACP or a seventeen shot 9mm? PS: I started with a .38 Special S&W before speed loaders were available and progressed through .357, 9mm, 10mm, .40 S&W, back to 9mm, and finally .45ACP. The .357 was my favorite LEO carry weapon but then I was never ask what I wanted to carry (now retired, I carry a .45 ACP).

everyone here will argue 45 ACP and while they certainly pack a wallop for defense carry situations, I like 9mms better personally. The 45 ACP is a good round and I guess if the police want to not feel out gunned then they could get the 40 cal.
Honestly believe that the switch to 9mm deals with the cost of the ammunition more so than the guns themselves. |

I carry a 16 shot .45, best of both worlds.

.45! Why? i live in maine! in cold weather ppl wear heavy clothes. heavy clothes turn HPJ's into ball ammo. in the words of Ayoob "if im gonna be throwing a ball, i would rather throw a big ball, than a small one" 9mm is fine in.....arizona.....texas....florida. Up north.......9mm can get ya killed hence why Maine State Police carry H&K USP's in .45

i alternate between my m&p9 full size to my sa loaded 1911 and to be honest even though my 1911 is a bit heavier, its a whole hell of alot easier to conceal when i pull my shirt over my holster, but when i'm working the sight of a cocked & locked .45 tends to slow down the avg criminal a bit.
i shoot both guns well, but in reality i don't see anyone going pass 5 rounds in a self defense shooting unless the shit really hit the fan, most times you won't even reload and if the people were that worried then this forum wouldn't exist and wheel/revolver guns would definitely be antiques and not in production... what ever you carry, practice and be proficient w/ the firearm... |

In before the lock!
![]() ![]() I'm shocked this thread has made it 6 posts before getting locked. Any thread titled 45 vs 9mm is destined for a brilliant, but short existence before it goes supernova.

It's not really 9 vs 45, it's the premise that you are better armed with a high capacity (seventeen round) small caliber pistol than a standard (seven round) capacity major caliber pistol.

FN does make a well-engineered product, though, so it is good that they are getting more LE exposure in the US. Of course Hi-powers were once HUGE in LE, but it has been a while. The FNX and FNS are both nice lines, and well thought out. 9mm has stopped plenty of criminals-- no need to hate on it even if I like .45 a little better. Most of the time I carry a 9 anyway.

+1 The 9mm vs. .45 ACP debate seems to be cyclic. The latest argument for 9mm is that 9mm ammo has improved so much over the past few years. This is probably true, but .45 ACP ammo has improved too. I suspect the pendulum with get another healthy wack towards .45 after the next epic shootout.

I'll take my .45 over a 9mm any day. I only have to shoot you once. Practice is key. I have shot next to LEOs at public ranges many times, and with only a few exceptions, they suck for the most part. .45 or 9mm notwithstanding.

Some may not like to practice, or may not be all that into guns, but keep in mind you're in the LE part of the forum. LEOs still risk their lives for their towns and cities. You could have worded it differently...

Wtf
Quote:
I've seen 9/.357/.40/.45 perform well. I've seen 9/.357/.40/.45 all fail. Start with premium ammo then add shot placement. The heavy coat is not kevlar. If you think this then attend a ballistic lab. Flannel, leather, denium and the great deal breaker - Automotive glass. A premium 9mm penetrates through as does premium .40 and .45. The budget stuff suffers. The pistol is easy to carry for self defense. I deploy with a rifle when the call demands it. I need every advantage I can get - I SUCK FOR THE MOST PART. |
